S355J0WP Weather Resistant Steel Plate per EN 10155 / EN 10025-5 Introduction
S355J0WP is a structural weathering steel defined in the European standard EN 10155 (now superseded by EN 10025-5). It offers improved atmospheric corrosion resistance compared to standard carbon steels due to the controlled addition of alloying elements such as copper, chromium, and nickel, along with a higher phosphorus content. The designation indicates a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa, longitudinal Charpy V-notch impact energy of 27 J at 0 °C (J0), and enhanced weather resistance (W) with elevated phosphorus (P).
This steel forms a protective, self-adhering patina when exposed to alternating wet and dry cycles, eliminating the need for painting in many applications. It is typically supplied in the hot-rolled condition and is widely used in structural and architectural applications where both strength and corrosion resistance are required.
S355J0WP Weather Resistant Steel Plate per EN 10155 / EN 10025-5 Chemical Composition
Ladle analysis specified in EN 10155 for S355J0WP. The enhanced phosphorus content, together with chromium and copper, promotes the formation of the protective patina. Nickel and molybdenum may be added in small amounts to further improve corrosion resistance. Note: The standard has been superseded by EN 10025-5, but the compositional limits remain identical.

S355J0WP Weather Resistant Steel Plate per EN 10155 / EN 10025-5 Application Introduction
S355J0WP is a specialised structural steel designed for unpainted applications in outdoor environments. The protective patina develops over time under natural weathering cycles. It is not recommended for immersion in water, burial, or continuous-wet conditions without additional protection. For welded structures, matching weathering steel consumables are required to maintain corrosion resistance at welds. The steel can be supplied with a factory-applied pre-patina treatment to accelerate the stable oxide layer formation.
Product Applications: Built-up bridge girders and box sections, Exposed architectural screens and façades, Lighting poles and high-mast towers, Shipping and storage containers (Corten B equivalent), Sculptures and landscape installations
Processed into products: Bridge bearing stiffeners and web plates, Welded beams and columns in open car parks, Bolted or riveted structural frameworks, Cold-formed purlins for building envelopes, Plasma-cut intricate decorative panels
Application industries: Bridge and highway engineering, Architecture and building (structural frames, cladding), Rolling stock and railway infrastructure, Container manufacturing, Power transmission towers, Industrial chimneys and ducting
