Prefabrication and Fabrication of ASTM A537CL2 Steel Plates for Large-Diameter Crude Oil Storage Tan

We supplied a batch of high-quality ASTM A537CL2 steel plates for a major local energy infrastructure project in Nigeria and completed the prefabrication and fabrication of the core shell plates for large-diameter crude oil storage tanks. This project fully demonstrates our comprehensive capabilities in the supply of steel for pressure vessels and the fabrication of complex storage tanks.

ASTM A537CL2 Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels

Large-diameter crude oil storage tanks impose extremely stringent requirements on material yield strength, tensile strength, and low-temperature impact toughness. The selected ASTM A537 Class 2 is a quenched and tempered carbon-manganese-silicon steel plate. Compared to ordinary carbon steel, it offers higher load-bearing capacity and superior fatigue resistance, making it the gold standard material for manufacturing ultra-large storage tanks and high-pressure vessels in the petrochemical industry. As shown in the actual photos, the custom-made raw plates—bearing clear mill marks and furnace batch numbers—lay a solid foundation for the quality of the entire project.

Detailed Drawing Development and 3D Modeling Analysis

The construction of large-scale oil storage tanks is not merely a matter of stacking materials; it is the implementation of precise calculations. Prior to fabrication, our technical engineering team used professional 3D modeling and CAD software to digitally layout the entire crude oil storage tank. We precisely disassembled the massive tank structure into multiple standard-sized wall panels and roof panels, which not only optimized material utilization but also generated accurate cutting and fabrication dimension data.

High-Precision CNC Cylindrical Forming

To ensure efficient and safe on-site assembly, all steel plates were prefabricated at our company's machining center. For the specific diameters of the storage tanks, we used a large CNC rolling machine to pre-bend and roll ASTM A537CL2 steel plates into arcs. During processing, we strictly controlled the reduction ratio and rolling speed to prevent surface scratches and eliminate residual stress within the material, ensuring that the final arc-shaped wall panels perfectly match the design radius.

Rigorous Inspection and On-Site Assembly

To ensure seamless butt welding of the finished products at the site in Nigeria, the quality inspection department used specialized curvature templates and measuring instruments to conduct 100% rigorous inspections of the radius of curvature, diagonal deviations, and edge bevels of every formed steel plate. As shown in the aerial photographs sent back, several giant crude oil storage tanks have been successfully completed at the project site in Nigeria, and their perfect geometric shapes attest to the precision of our dimensional control during the fabrication phase.
