NK Grade F40 is specifically designed for primary hull structures in vessels operating in low-temperature environments, such as ice-class ships, LNG carriers, and Arctic offshore units. It is suitable for the most highly stressed regions like deck panels, sheer strakes, bilge strakes, and longitudinal girders. The excellent low-temperature toughness ensures resistance to brittle fracture even under dynamic loading conditions. The steel can be processed by standard shipyard methods: cutting, forming, and automatic welding. Preheating may be required for thick sections or when welding in cold climates, following approved welding procedures. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is not mandatory unless specified by the classification rules for special applications.
