JIS G3114 SMA570P Weather Resistant Steel Plate Introduction

SMA570P is a high-strength atmospheric corrosion-resistant hot-rolled steel for welded structures specified in JIS G3114 (Japan). It is designed for applications where the structure is normally painted, as indicated by the suffix "P". The steel offers a minimum tensile strength of 570 MPa and good weldability. Its alloying with copper, chromium, and nickel provides enhanced resistance to atmospheric corrosion compared to plain carbon steels.

Key features:

  • Minimum yield strength of 460 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm
  • Tensile strength range: 570–720 MPa
  • Good forming and welding characteristics
  • Improved corrosion resistance through controlled additions of Cu, Cr, and Ni
  • Available in plate form up to 160 mm thickness

Tensile test specimens are taken in the transverse direction for plates. Yield strength (ReH) and elongation depend on plate thickness. Bend test is required with mandrel diameter as listed. Impact test is not mandatory for SMA570P but can be agreed upon; therefore, Charpy values are not included here.

JIS G3114 SMA570P Weather Resistant Steel Plate Application Introduction

SMA570P is intended for painted welded structural applications exposed to the atmosphere. Thanks to its alloy content, it develops a stable oxide layer that reduces corrosion rate, and the high strength permits lighter structures. The steel can be welded by conventional methods, but proper preheating and interpass temperatures must be maintained.

Typical usage sectors:

Product Applications: Welded plate girders, Fabricated box sections, Heavy columns and trusses, Container side panels and frames, Railway wagon bodies

Processed into products: Flanges and webs of welded beams, Gusset plates and splices, Base plates and stiffeners, Container corner castings and rails, Fatigue-loaded nodes in bridges

Application industries: Bridge construction (girders, cross beams, stiffeners), Building and civil engineering (structural frames, columns, beams), Railway vehicle manufacturing (bogies, underframes), Container and shipping (dry cargo containers exposed to weather), Port and offshore structures (walkways, cranes)

EuropeEN 10025-5S355J2W (1.8965)Lower strength class, but widely available weathering steel; often used where high strength is not critical
USAASTM A588 / A588MGrade (various)General weathering steel (yield ≥345 MPa); lower strength, but excellent corrosion resistance

Notes:

For thicknesses above 160 mm, apply JIS G3136 SN steel or consult the manufacturer. All welding shall follow JIS Z 3605 (welding consumables for atmospheric corrosion resisting steel) or equivalent. When used in unpainted condition, SMA570W is recommended. Surface preparation prior to painting must remove mill scale for optimal adhesion.
