EN10028-5 P460M thermomechanically rolled pressure vessel steel plate Introduction
P460M is a fine-grain structural steel belonging to EN 10028-5, intended for pressure vessels and boilers. It is delivered in the thermomechanically rolled (+M) condition, which grants an excellent combination of high strength (minimum yield 460 MPa), good toughness at low temperatures, and reliable weldability. Thanks to controlled rolling and microalloying, P460M offers uniform mechanical properties across a wide thickness range and can be used for welded pressure equipment operating under moderate to elevated service temperatures. Typical applications include storage spheres, industrial boilers, heat exchangers, and chemical reactors.

Notes:
- Preheat and interpass temperature control may be necessary depending on thickness and welding process to avoid hydrogen cracking.
- Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is generally not required for TMCP condition but can be applied by agreement for thick sections.
- CEV ≤ 0.43 ensures good weldability without special precautions provided low-hydrogen consumables are used and plate temperature is adequate.
- Material can be ordered with additional testing (e.g., through-thickness tensile, ultrasonic examination) according to EN 10028-5 options.
