19Mn6 is a carbon-manganese steel grade designed for elevated temperature pressure vessels and boilers under the withdrawn German standard DIN 17155. It offers a well-balanced combination of high tensile strength, good weldability, and reliable notch toughness in the normalized condition. Typical applications include steam boilers, pressurized storage tanks, and process equipment operating up to approximately 400°C. The steel is produced as killed fine-grain material, usually with aluminium addition, ensuring uniform mechanical properties across thicknesses up to 150 mm. Its chemical composition is controlled to provide adequate creep resistance and long-term service stability. Although the standard has been superseded by EN 10028-2 P295GH, 19Mn6 remains widely recognized in maintenance and replacement projects. It can be readily formed, welded with low-hydrogen procedures, and post-weld heat treated when required. 19Mn6 (and its modern equivalent P295GH) is intended for welded pressure vessels and boilers operating at moderate temperatures. Its good formability and weldability allow fabrication of large-capacity vessels and complex components. Design stresses are typically taken from the corresponding EN or ASME code cases. Post-weld heat treatment is mandatory above certain thicknesses to relieve residual stresses. The steel is not recommended for sub-zero applications unless impact tested at the design temperature.
