ASME SA283 Grade B Carbon Steel Plate Introduction
ASME SA283 Grade B (SA283 GRB) is a carbon steel plate grade specified under the ASME SA283/SA283M standard for low and intermediate tensile strength structural applications. It is essentially identical to ASTM A283 Grade B. Typical delivery condition is as-rolled, with good weldability and formability due to its low carbon content.

SA283 Grade B is a workhorse material for structural construction and machinery. Its moderate strength and excellent fabrication characteristics make it suitable for a wide range of welded assemblies. It is not intended for pressure vessel shells or high‑temperature service without additional qualification.

Notes:
Fabrication notes: SA283 Grade B plates are normally supplied in the as‑rolled condition. The low carbon content ensures excellent cold forming and hot forming possibilities. All common welding methods can be used; for thicknesses exceeding 1 in. (25 mm), low‑hydrogen electrodes and preheating may be recommended to avoid cracking. The material is not designed for high‑temperature or pressure‑retaining applications unless additional testing is performed. When specified, copper content (≥0.20%) provides some improvement in atmospheric corrosion resistance.
