Under alternating wet and dry conditions, it develops a dense, adherent oxide patina that protects the base metal from further corrosion, often eliminating the need for painting. This grade is specified for welded, bolted, or riveted construction in bridges, buildings, and other structures where weight saving and durability are critical. The steel combines a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi (345 MPa) with good weldability and notch toughness. Key alloying elements – copper, chromium, nickel, and vanadium – provide the weathering characteristics. Notes:
Atmospheric Corrosion Performance: When exposed to alternating wet/dry cycles, A588 Grade A forms a dense, self-healing oxide layer (patina) that slows further corrosion. In environments with high chloride (coastal) or heavy industrial pollution, periodic washing or a protective coating may be required.
Weldability: The steel is readily weldable using common processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW) with low-hydrogen electrodes. Preheating is not usually required for thicknesses < 1.5 in., but refer to AWS D1.1 for specific procedures.
Forming: Good cold-bending properties; hot forming may alter the patina formation; re-weathering is possible after fabrication.
Certification: Material can be supplied with mill test reports (MTRs) showing chemical and mechanical properties. Dual certification with A588 Grade B or A709 Grade 50W is common upon request.
