JIS G3114 SMA400AP Weather Resistant Steel Plate Introduction
SMA400AP is a hot-rolled atmospheric corrosion resisting steel for welded structures, specified in JIS G3114. The suffix 'P' indicates the plate is intended primarily for painted use, enabling enhanced durability in corrosive environments. It belongs to the SMA400A strength class with a minimum tensile strength of 400 MPa and a minimum yield strength of 245 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm. The steel contains alloying elements such as copper, chromium, and optionally nickel, which create a protective patina and improve weather resistance. Key features:
- Excellent corrosion resistance in atmospheric exposure, particularly when painted
- Good weldability for structural fabrication
- Balanced strength and ductility for a wide range of applications
- Cost-effective solution for bridges, buildings, and industrial structures exposed to weather

JIS G3114 SMA400AP Weather Resistant Steel Plate Mechanical Properties
Tensile properties are in accordance with JIS G3114. Specimens are taken in the transverse direction. Elongation values depend on the test piece used. For plate thickness ≤5 mm, JIS No.5 test piece (gauge length 50 mm, diameter 14 mm); for thickness >5–16 mm, JIS No.1A test piece (gauge length 200 mm, diameter 20 mm) or No.14A (50 mm gauge) may be used by agreement. Bending test is mandatory. Impact test is not required for SMA400AP (class A) unless specially agreed.
- Yield strength (ReH) and tensile strength (Rm) are valid for thickness up to 100 mm; values for thickness >100 mm shall be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
- Elongation requirements for thickness >16 mm are specified separately.

Notes:
This data represents the standard requirements of JIS G3114 for SMA400AP. Special agreements regarding impact properties, restrictions on Ni, or tighter chemistry may be arranged at the time of order. The plate shall be free from detrimental surface defects; ultrasonic testing can be specified. Welding consumables should match the base material weathering properties (e.g., use of Cu–Ni–Cr containing electrodes). For prolonged service in aggressive environments, a suitable high-durability paint system is recommended. The values in physical properties table are typical for structural weathering steels and are not mandatory requirements of the standard.
