JIS G3114 SMA400CW Weather Resistant Steel Plate Introduction
SMA400CW is a hot-rolled atmospheric corrosion-resistant structural steel plate defined in JIS G3114. It is specifically designed for welded structures exposed to ambient weathering conditions. Through controlled additions of copper, chromium, and nickel, the steel develops a dense, adherent patina that significantly retards further corrosion, often eliminating the need for protective painting.
- Minimum tensile strength: 400 MPa
- Guaranteed Charpy impact toughness at 0°C (47 J min)
- Excellent weldability with conventional processes
- Proven long-term durability in outdoor applications
Typical uses include bridges, building frames, containers, and railway vehicles. Delivery condition is usually as-rolled; normalising or controlled rolling may be agreed.
JIS G3114 SMA400CW Weather Resistant Steel Plate Chemical Composition
Chemical composition according to JIS G3114. The elements Cu, Cr, and Ni are intentionally added to promote the formation of a protective rust layer ('patina'). Low carbon and phosphorus contents ensure good weldability and toughness. Additional microalloying elements (Mo, Nb, V, Ti) may be present by mutual agreement.

JIS G3114 SMA400CW Weather Resistant Steel Plate Application Introduction
SMA400CW is intended for unpainted or minimally coated structural applications where long-term atmospheric exposure is expected. It is widely used in welded fabrications that benefit from reduced maintenance. The corrosion-resistant patina forms naturally when the surface is alternately wet and dry; therefore, sheltered or continuously immersed conditions should be avoided unless protective measures are taken.
Product Applications: Weather resistant steel plates and sheets, Welded structural assemblies, Architectural exposed steelwork, Container frames and corner posts, Railway wagon bodies and underframes, Offshore platform secondary members
Processed into products: Bridge girders, cross-beams and truss members, Building columns, beams and bracing, ISO container corner posts, front/rear sill, side rails, Railroad freight car bodies and chassis, Architectural cladding and facade panels, Deck plates and stiffeners
Application industries: Bridge engineering, Building and construction (facades, roofing), Container and intermodal transport, Railway vehicle manufacture, Port and offshore structures, Architectural exposed steel design

Notes:
Welding considerations: SMA400CW exhibits low carbon equivalent and is readily weldable by common methods (SMAW, GMAW, SAW). Preheating is generally not required for moderate thicknesses and ambient temperatures. Patina formation: Uniform corrosion resistance develops after several cycles of wetting/drying. Initial flash rusting is normal and contributes to the protective layer. Avoid continuous contact with water or buried conditions unless specially protected. Certification: Mill test certificates usually include chemical analysis, tensile properties, and impact tests as per the standard.
