EN 10155 S355K2G1W Weather Resistant Steel Plate Introduction

S355K2G1W is a European structural weathering steel grade from the withdrawn standard EN 10155. It belongs to the class of low-alloy steels with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. The alloying elements (Cu, Cr, Ni) promote the formation of a dense, self-healing oxide layer (patina) that significantly reduces corrosion rates in most atmospheric environments, often eliminating the need for protective coatings. The G1 designation indicates delivery in the normalized or normalized rolled condition. K2 guarantees a minimum impact energy of 40 J at -20°C. Typical applications include uncoated bridges, building envelopes, containers, and railway vehicles. The current replacement standard is EN 10025-5 S355K2W.

Chemical composition limits for S355K2G1W according to EN 10155. The steel is alloyed to enhance atmospheric corrosion resistance. Microalloying elements such as Nb, V, Ti, Al may be added at the manufacturer's discretion to achieve fine grain and mechanical properties; when added they shall be reported in the inspection document.

Mechanical properties in normalized (+N) or normalized rolled (+NR) condition according to EN 10155. Values are valid for flat products and depend on the nominal thickness t. The impact test is performed on longitudinal Charpy‑V specimens at -20°C. Elongation is measured on a proportional gauge length Lo=5.65√So. Bend test mandrel diameter d depends on thickness.

EN 10155 S355K2G1W Weather Resistant Steel Plate Application Introduction

S355K2G1W weathering steel is intended for load‑bearing structures where enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance is exploited. The stable patina that forms after alternating wet/dry cycles reduces maintenance and allows unpainted use in many outdoor environments. It is not recommended for

  • permanently wet or submerged conditions,
  • aggressive industrial atmospheres with high SO₂ concentration,
  • marine splash zones without additional protection.

Proper detailing and drainage are required to avoid moisture traps. Welding consumables must match the strength and weathering characteristics of the base material.

Product Applications: Weathering steel bridges (composite and plate girder), Multi‑storey building frames and exposed architectural panels, ISO freight containers and swap bodies, High‑voltage transmission line towers, Outdoor sculptures and landscape elements

Processed into products: Bridge main girders, cross beams, stiffeners, Welded box sections and hollow profiles for columns, Container corner castings, side and roof panels, Tower legs, angle braces, and gusset plates, Cold‑formed purlins and cladding rails

Application industries: Bridge and highway construction, Building and civil engineering (facades, canopies), Railway rolling stock and freight container manufacturing, Energy sector (transmission towers, wind tower sections), Architecture and public art (weathering steel sculptures, cladding)

Notes:

  • EN 10155 has been superseded; for new projects always specify EN 10025-5 S355K2W.
  • Welding procedure qualifications shall include consideration of the weathering alloying elements to ensure matching corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
  • Preheating may be required for thicknesses above 30 mm; follow recommendations of the consumable manufacturer.
  • Minimum forming radii for cold work shall respect the recommendations of the steel producer; typical r/t ratios are ≥2 for transverse bends.
