EN 10025-5 S355J2W Weather Resistant Steel Plate Introduction

EN 10025-5 S355J2W is a thermomechanically rolled weldable fine grain structural steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance (weathering steel). It is designed for use in welded, bolted or riveted structures in outdoor exposure, where enhanced durability against corrosion is required. The proprietary alloying elements (primarily Cr, Cu, Ni) form a protective patina that inhibits further corrosion, often eliminating the need for painting. The 'J2' suffix indicates guaranteed longitudinal impact energy of minimum 27 J at -20°C. S355J2W offers a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm and is widely used in bridges, building facades, containers, and structural frameworks.

EN 10025-5 S355J2W Weather Resistant Steel Plate Chemical Composition according to EN 10025-5

The chemical composition is based on cast analysis. The table lists the permissible ranges for major alloying elements that provide enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance. Other elements are controlled as residual impurities. Note: To achieve the equivalent corrosion resistance index, the alloy content must satisfy the formula given in the standard (typically related to Cr, Cu, P, Ni).

Notes:

For welding, use electrodes matching the weather resistance (e.g., AWS E7018-W or equivalent). Preheating may be required for thick sections. The stable protective patina develops after several wet-dry cycles; in highly aggressive environments (marine splash, heavy industrial pollution), periodic inspection is recommended. Products can be delivered with inspection certificates according to EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.
