ABS Grade FQ63 Introduction
ABS Grade FQ63 is a high-strength quenched and tempered (Q&T) steel plate regulated by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for shipbuilding and offshore structures. This grade belongs to the ABS extra-high strength series, with a minimum yield strength of 63 ksi (435 MPa). It offers a superior combination of high tensile strength, excellent notch toughness at low temperatures, and good weldability when proper procedures are followed. The fine-grain microstructure achieved through controlled rolling and subsequent quenching and tempering provides enhanced resistance to brittle fracture and fatigue, making it suitable for critical structural members in harsh marine environments. Typical applications include hull girders, deck plating, bulkheads, and offshore platform components where weight savings and reliability are essential.
ABS Grade FQ63 Chemical Composition as per ABS Requirements
The chemical composition is strictly controlled to ensure the required mechanical properties and weldability. Carbon equivalent (CE IIW) is limited to a maximum of 0.45% for thicknesses ≤ 50 mm to prevent cold cracking. Fine grain practice is mandatory, and aluminium is usually added as a grain refiner. Residual elements are kept low.

ABS Grade FQ63 Mechanical Properties
Mechanical properties are dependent on plate thickness. Tensile testing is performed on transverse specimens. Charpy V-notch impact tests are carried out at -60 °C for class 'F' material. The bend test specimen shall withstand 180° bending without cracking.

Notes:
Welding: Preheat and interpass temperature control are essential (typically 100–200°C) to avoid cold cracking. Low-hydrogen welding consumables should be used. Forming: Hot or cold forming may be applied; hot forming above the tempering temperature requires re-tempering. Inspection: Plates are normally supplied with ultrasonic testing (UT) according to ABS rules or purchaser's specification. Certification: Each plate is stamped with the ABS mark and delivered with a 3.2 certificate.
