SUS436J1L Ferritic Stainless Steel Introduction

SUS436J1L is a low-carbon, titanium/niobium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel specified in JIS G4305 (cold-rolled) and JIS G4304 (hot-rolled). It offers excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion, good formability, and high-temperature oxidation resistance up to approximately 800°C. The alloy is designed to prevent sensitization during welding by stabilizing carbon and nitrogen with titanium, niobium, or zirconium. Compared to standard SUS436L, the J1L variant provides improved pitting resistance due to controlled molybdenum addition (0.75-1.25%). Typical applications include automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, and kitchen equipment. The steel is ferritic through all temperature ranges and is not hardenable by heat treatment.

SUS436J1L Ferritic Stainless Steel Chemical Composition

The following chemical composition is according to JIS G4305:2012 for cold-rolled stainless steel plate/coil. The alloy is stabilized with titanium, niobium, and/or zirconium to prevent chromium carbide precipitation. The stabilizing elements must satisfy the formula: Ti ≥ 8×(C+N) and ≤ 0.80; Nb ≥ 10×C and ≤ 1.00; and Ti+Nb+Zr ≥ 0.10 + 8×(C+N).

SUS436J1L Ferritic Stainless Steel Application Introduction

SUS436J1L is extensively used where weldable ferritic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance and high-temperature oxidation resistance is required. Its low carbon and stabilization prevent intergranular attack after welding, making it suitable for formed and welded components without post-weld heat treatment. It can be processed by deep drawing, bending, stamping, and welding (TIG, MIG, resistance welding). Typical applications span automotive, household appliances, and industrial sectors.

Product Applications: Automotive exhaust pipes and mufflers, Catalytic converter housings, Manifold covers and heat shields, Hot water storage tanks (indirect heating), Kitchen sinks and countertops, Heat exchanger tubes and plates, Washing machine outer tubs and drums

Processed into products: Exhaust manifold flanges, EGR cooler components, Fuel filler necks, Heat exchanger baffles, Dishwasher interiors, Chimney liners, Solar water heater collectors

Application industries: Automotive (exhaust, fuel systems), Heat exchanger and boiler manufacturing, Household appliances (kitchen equipment, washing machines), Architecture and construction (cladding, roofing), Industrial chemical processing equipment, Environmental engineering (flue gas desulfurization)

SUS436J1L Ferritic Stainless Steel Similar / Alternative Material Recommendations

Country/RegionStandardGradeRemarks
JapanJIS G4305SUS430J1LLower Mo (0.9-1.25%) but higher C (≤0.025); slightly reduced corrosion resistance but often used interchangeably in less demanding exhaust environments
JapanJIS G4305SUS436LMo 0.75-1.25% but Ti+Nb stabilization may differ; similar performance
USAASTM A240S43932 (Type 439)Ti-stabilized 18Cr without Mo; lower cost but lower pitting resistance
EuropeEN 10088-21.4509 (X2CrTiNb18)18Cr stabilized with Ti+Nb, no Mo; suitable for applications where Mo is not required
ChinaGB/T 3280S11863 (019Cr19Mo2NbTi)19Cr-2Mo stabilized; higher Mo for improved corrosion

Notes:

Welding considerations: Use low heat input and matching or slightly over-alloyed filler (e.g., 309L or 308L). No preheating or post-weld heat treatment required. Surface finish: Available in 2B, BA, No.4, and brushed finishes. Ordering condition: Typically supplied annealed and pickled, meeting JIS G4305 tolerances. Caution: Although stable at high temperatures, prolonged exposure above 850°C may cause grain growth and embrittlement. Not recommended for load-bearing applications at cryogenic temperatures due to ductile-to-brittle transition.
