SUS436L Ferritic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Introduction
SUS436L is an ultra-low carbon, titanium- or niobium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel containing molybdenum. It offers excellent corrosion resistance superior to standard ferritic grades like SUS430, combined with good formability and weldability. The stabilization with Ti or Nb prevents intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone, making it suitable for welding without post-weld heat treatment. Typical applications include automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, and kitchenware. Its low thermal expansion and good high-temperature oxidation resistance are key advantages.
SUS436L Ferritic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of SUS436L according to JIS G4305 standard. The steel is stabilized with titanium (Ti) or niobium (Nb) to prevent sensitization during welding. Carbon and nitrogen contents are kept extremely low to enhance corrosion resistance and formability. Molybdenum is added to improve pitting resistance.

SUS436L Ferritic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Similar / Alternative Materials with Comparable Properties
| Country / Region | Standard | Grade | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | JIS G4305 | SUS430LX | 17Cr-Ti, no Mo, lower corrosion resistance but cheaper; good formability |
| Japan / USA | JIS / ASTM | SUS430 / AISI 430 | 17Cr, no stabilizers, susceptible to sensitization; limited weldability |
| Japan / Europe | JIS / EN | SUS444 / 1.4521 (X2CrMoTi18-2-4) | 18Cr-2Mo-Ti, higher Mo for better pitting resistance; often used in similar applications |
| USA | ASTM | Type 439 (UNS S43035) | 17-19Cr, Ti-stabilized, lower Mo than 436L; good for exhaust systems |
| Europe | EN | 1.4509 (X2CrTiNb18) | Nb-Ti stabilized 18Cr, no Mo; an economical alternative for less corrosive environments |
Notes:
SUS436L is fully ferritic at all temperatures and is magnetic. It can be welded using standard methods for stainless steel without preheating. Post-weld annealing is generally not required due to stabilization. For optimal corrosion resistance, surfaces should be pickled and passivated after welding. The steel is not hardenable by heat treatment.
