304 Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Introduction

AISI 304 (UNS S30400) is the most widely used austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel. It contains 18–20% Cr and 8–10.5% Ni, which confer excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of atmospheric, chemical, and food-processing environments. 304 exhibits good ductility, formability, and weldability. In the solution-annealed condition it is non-magnetic, but may become slightly magnetic after cold working. It is typically supplied as plate, sheet, or coil in various finishes (2B, No.4, BA) and can be hot or cold rolled. The steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment – strength is increased by cold working only. Its balanced composition makes it a universal choice for architectural panels, kitchen equipment, chemical vessels, and heat exchangers.

Nitrogen (N) is not normally specified in ASTM A240 but may be controlled to 0.10% max; other standards like EN 10088-2 explicitly limit N to 0.10%. The carbon limit ensures intergranular corrosion resistance in the welded condition for moderate thicknesses. Phosphorus and sulfur are kept low for purity.

Minimum mechanical property requirements per ASTM A240/A240M for plate, sheet, and coil in the solution-annealed condition at room temperature. For product thicknesses greater than 4.76 mm (0.1875 in.), the same minimum values generally apply, but test specimen geometry and gauge length may differ. Hardness is not a mandatory requirement in many standards but is often measured. The steel exhibits excellent ductility and strain-hardening characteristics.

Notes:

304 (S30400) plate and coil are typically available in thicknesses from 0.3 mm to over 100 mm. For thicknesses above 12.7 mm, the material may require solution annealing after welding to restore full corrosion resistance. When used in the as-welded condition in heavy sections, the risk of sensitization (chromium carbide precipitation) in the heat-affected zone should be assessed; for critical welded applications, 304L or a stabilized grade is recommended. Surface finishes include 2B (cold-rolled, annealed, pickled), No. 1 (hot-rolled, annealed, pickled), BA (bright annealed), and various polished finishes. Customized surface roughness, protective films, and PVC coatings can be supplied. For magnetic property requirements, note that 304 is non-magnetic in the annealed state but becomes slightly magnetic after cold deformation. Electrical resistivity and thermal properties make it suitable for certain electronic components where moderate electrical conductivity is needed. Ensure compliance with ASTM A480/A480M for general requirements for flat-rolled stainless steel products.
