SUS410L Ferritic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Introduction

SUS410L is a low-carbon, 13% chromium ferritic stainless steel standardized under Japanese Industrial Standard JIS G4304/G4305. It is not an austenitic grade, despite some listings; its ferritic microstructure provides good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, organic acids, and oxidizing media. The extremely low carbon content (≤0.03%) minimizes the risk of sensitization during welding, allowing it to be used in as-welded conditions without post-weld heat treatment.

  • Key features: excellent weldability, moderate strength, good formability, and high thermal conductivity compared to austenitic stainless steels.
  • Magnetic: ferritic structure is inherently magnetic.
  • Delivery conditions: typically supplied in annealed condition as plates and coils, with a surface finish of No.1, 2B, or 2D.
  • Typical industries include automotive exhaust systems, heat exchangers, kitchenware, and architectural applications where corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness are required.

SUS410L Ferritic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Application Introduction

SUS410L is widely used where a combination of moderate corrosion resistance, good formability, and low cost is required. It is particularly suited for welding-intensive applications. The ferritic structure avoids stress-corrosion cracking typical of austenitic grades.

  • Key advantages: magnetic, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion, and eco-friendly (nickel-free).
  • Limitations: limited toughness at low temperatures and lower corrosion resistance than 300-series grades.

Product Applications: Cold-rolled sheet for pressed parts, Hot-rolled plate for welded structures, Coil for roll-formed sections, Welded tubing for exhaust systems

Processed into products: Automotive exhaust flanges, Heat exchanger fins and tube plates, Washing machine drum supports, Structural brackets in corrosive atmospheres, Kitchen sink supports and mounting frames

Application industries: Automotive: exhaust manifolds, mufflers, catalytic converter shells, White goods: washing machine tubs, dishwasher interiors, Energy: heat exchanger tubes, flue gas ducts, Construction: architectural panels, handrails, roofing, Food processing: containers, conveyors (non-acidic environments)

GermanyDIN EN 10088-21.4003 (X2CrNi12)Contains 0.30-1.00 Ni, slightly better weldability
USAASTM A240410LSimilar composition, sometimes considered same as SUS410L
USAASTM A240409 (S40900)Lower Cr (10.5-11.75), stabilized with Ti, used in exhausts
ChinaGB/T 4237019Cr12 (S11203)Close but may have slight compositional differences

Notes:

SUS410L is not precipitation hardening. It is fully ferritic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Annealing is typically performed at 700-820°C followed by air or water cooling. Due to the absence of nickel, it is often preferred for cost-sensitive applications and for users with nickel allergy concerns. Weld filler metals of similar composition (e.g., AWS E/ER410L) are recommended for matching corrosion resistance.
