JIS SUS317L Austenitic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Introduction
SUS317L is a low-carbon version of SUS317 austenitic stainless steel, designed to prevent intergranular corrosion after welding without post-weld annealing. It contains a high level of molybdenum (3.00–4.00%), which significantly enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments. The low carbon content (max 0.030%) minimizes carbide precipitation during welding. SUS317L is used in applications requiring high corrosion resistance, such as chemical processing equipment, flue gas desulfurization systems, and food processing machinery. It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. The material is typically supplied in the solution-annealed condition with excellent formability and weldability.

JIS SUS317L Austenitic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Similar or Substitute Material Recommendations
| Country/Region | Standard | Grade | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | JIS G4304/G4305 | SUS317 | Higher carbon (≤0.08%) may lead to sensitization after welding, SUS317L preferred for welded applications |
| Japan | JIS G4304/G4305 | SUS316L | Lower molybdenum (2.0-3.0%), lower pitting resistance, but more economical |
| Japan | JIS G4304/G4305 | SUS317J1 | Higher Cr and Ni, different corrosion profile, can be an upgrade option |
| USA | ASTM A240 | S31725 / S31726 (317LMN) | Nitrogen-enhanced grades with higher strength and corrosion resistance |
Notes:
SUS317L is non-hardenable by heat treatment and should be used in the solution-annealed condition for optimum corrosion resistance. Welding consumables of matching composition (e.g., ER317L filler wire) or slightly over-alloyed (e.g., ER317L with higher Mo) are recommended to maintain corrosion performance. Post-weld pickling or passivation may be required for welded areas. The material is generally non-magnetic, but slight magnetism may develop after cold working. Service temperatures should be limited to below 450°C to avoid sigma phase embrittlement.
