GB/T14164-2013 5L PSL1 L290 Pipeline Steel Coil Introduction

L290 (X42) PSL1 pipeline steel according to GB/T14164-2013 is a micro-alloyed low carbon steel intended for welded and seamless pipes in petroleum and natural gas transmission systems. The grade designation L290 indicates a minimum specified yield strength of 290 MPa in transverse testing, with X42 expressing the approximate strength in ksi (42 ksi). This material is supplied in coil form for efficient spiral or longitudinal pipe manufacturing. It features good weldability from controlled chemistry (carbon equivalent limits), adequate toughness for moderate conditions, and balanced strength-ductility for cold forming and pipe expansion. The PSL1 classification provides basic requirements suitable for standard pressure applications, while the TMCP or normalized rolling delivers homogeneous microstructure and consistent mechanical properties across the coil length.

GB/T14164-2013 5L PSL1 L290 Pipeline Steel Coil Chemical Composition

The chemical composition complies with GB/T14164-2013 Table 6 for PSL 1 pipe. Limits apply to both seamless and welded pipes. Microalloying elements V, Nb, Ti are used for grain refinement and precipitation strengthening; their sum shall not exceed 0.15% when any of the three is intentionally added. Carbon equivalent CE(IIW) is a mandatory acceptance requirement for welded pipe to ensure field weldability.

Tensile and bend testing per GB/T14164-2013 for PSL1 pipe. Elongation is calculated using standard formula based on test specimen cross-sectional area and actual tensile strength. Impact testing is performed only when specified in purchase order; when required, minimum absorbed energy is 27 J at 0°C on transverse specimens. Bend test uses a mandrel diameter of 4 times the wall thickness (4T) with 180° bending angle.

GB/T14164-2013 5L PSL1 L290 Pipeline Steel Coil Application Introduction

L290 (X42) PSL1 steel coil is the workhorse material for the oil and gas transportation pipeline industry. Its balanced properties allow economical manufacturing of large-diameter pipes by spiral or longitudinal welding, as well as smaller ERW pipes. The PSL1 level is commonly specified for medium-pressure onshore pipelines, flow lines, and structural applications where stringent toughness is not the primary requirement.

Product Applications: Spiral submerged arc welded (SSAW) pipes (up to 60 inches diameter), Longitudinal submerged arc welded (LSAW/JCOE) pipes, Electric resistance welded (ERW/HFW) line pipes (smaller diameters), Coated and lined pipes for corrosion protection, Pipe spools and induction bends

Processed into products: Line pipe segments for mainline and feeder pipelines, Flow lines and gathering lines from wellheads, Pipe elbows (hot induction bends) and tees (welded), Reducer fittings and nipples manufactured from pipe, Pipe-based structural members, piling, and casings

Application industries: Oil and gas transmission and distribution, Water supply and sewage treatment, Slurry and tailings pipelines, Petrochemical and refining process piping, Construction and civil engineering (piling, structural bracing)

InternationalAPI 5LX42 PSL2Stricter chemistry (lower S, P, C) and mandatory impact toughness; suitable for more critical applications

Notes:

The data above reflect mandatory requirements of GB/T14164-2013 for PSL 1 L290/X42 pipe. Actual values from a material test certificate may show narrower ranges. Elongation is calculated individually for each pipe lot based on geometry and achieved strength. For PSL2 orders, tighter chemical limits (P ≤0.020%, S ≤0.010%) and mandatory Charpy impact testing apply. When using this steel in welded structures, preheating and interpass temperature control may be recommended depending on thickness and carbon equivalent. Always refer to latest edition of referenced standards for current validity.
