GB/T 9711-2011 PSL2 L485 ERW Pipeline Steel Pipe Introduction
L485 is a high-strength low-alloy steel grade for longitudinally welded pipes in the oil and gas transmission industry. It is defined in GB/T 9711-2011 PSL2 and corresponds to API 5L X70. The material is characterized by excellent weldability, high yield strength (≥485 MPa), superior toughness, and good resistance to sour environments. Produced by electric resistance welding (ERW) from hot-rolled coils, it meets stringent requirements for uniform mechanical properties and strict dimensional tolerances. PSL2 specification imposes additional controls on chemical composition, notch toughness, and non-destructive testing, ensuring reliable service under high pressure and low-temperature conditions.
GB/T 9711-2011 PSL2 L485 ERW Pipeline Steel Pipe Chemical Composition
Limits as per GB/T 9711-2011, Table 4, for PSL2 L485 steel. Mill shall ensure fine grain practice and may use micro-alloying elements (Nb, V, Ti) singly or in combination. Carbon equivalent (Pcm) is controlled for weldability: Pcm ≤ 0.22% (for wall thickness ≤25 mm). These values ensure a balanced ferrite-pearlite microstructure for high strength and toughness.

Notes:
PSL2 L485 ERW pipe requires mandatory post-weld heat treatment of the weld seam (normalizing) unless proven equivalent toughness is achieved. Non-destructive testing (NDT) is mandatory for the entire weld: 100% ultrasonic or electromagnetic inspection. Hydrostatic test is compulsory for each pipe, typically holding pressure corresponding to 95% of SMYS. Mill certificates shall include chemical analysis, mechanical test results per batch, and NDT records. When specified for sour service (H₂S environments), supplementary requirements for HIC/SSC testing (NACE TM0284/TM0177) should be included in the purchase order.
