EN 10149-2 S500MC Introduction

S500MC is a thermomechanically rolled, high-yield-strength steel for cold forming, specified in EN 10149-2. It belongs to the group of weldable fine-grain structural steels with a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm.

  • Excellent cold formability combined with high strength, enabling weight reduction in automotive structures.
  • Good weldability due to low carbon equivalent and microalloying (Nb, V, Ti).
  • Typically delivered in the as-rolled or thermomechanically rolled condition, sometimes with a controlled cooling.

Its balanced mechanical properties make it ideal for chassis and structural parts where high load capacity and good fatigue resistance are required.

EN 10149-2 S500MC Chemical Composition

The chemical composition complies with EN 10149-2:2013. The steel is microalloyed with niobium, vanadium, and/or titanium to achieve grain refinement and precipitation strengthening. A minimum aluminum content ensures adequate nitrogen binding.

  • Low carbon content helps maintain good weldability.
  • Sulfur and phosphorus are tightly controlled to enhance toughness and formability.
ElementStandard Value (max unless range)Remarks
Carbon (C)≤ 0.12Increases strength but reduces weldability and formability
Silicon (Si)≤ 0.50Deoxidizer, improves strength
Manganese (Mn)≤ 1.70Improves hardenability and strength
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.025Controlled for toughness
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.015Low sulfur for improved formability and welding
Aluminum (Al total)≥ 0.015Grain refinement and nitrogen fixation
Niobium (Nb)≤ 0.09Microalloying element for grain refinement and precipitation strengthening
Vanadium (V)≤ 0.20Microalloying element, contributes to strength
Titanium (Ti)≤ 0.15Microalloying element, forms carbides/nitrides
Nb+V+Ti≤ 0.22Sum of microalloying elements, as per standard

EN 10149-2 S500MC Application Introduction

S500MC is especially designed for cold-formed structural components that require a combination of high strength, good weldability, and excellent dimensional accuracy. Typical applications include automotive chassis parts, crane booms, and agricultural machinery frames. It can be processed by laser cutting, plasma cutting, bending, and stamping. The steel is not intended for heat treatment by the customer, as the mechanical properties are obtained through the thermomechanical rolling process.

Product Applications: Truck chassis frames and cross members, Passenger car longitudinal beams and reinforcements, Trailer and semi-trailer structural parts, Crane booms and outriggers, Agricultural machinery chassis, Container corner castings and frames

Processed into products: Chassis side rails and cross members, Suspension control arms and brackets, Axle beams and support structures, Cold-bent profiles for structural frameworks, Stamped floor panels and reinforcements, Welded tubular components (after roll forming)

Application industries: Automotive and transportation, Construction machinery, Agricultural equipment, Crane and lifting equipment, Railway vehicles
