EN 10149-2 S460MC Steel Introduction
S460MC is a hot-rolled, thermomechanically rolled structural steel according to EN 10149-2. It belongs to the family of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels with fine grain structure achieved through microalloying (niobium, vanadium, titanium). The steel offers a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa in delivery condition, excellent cold formability, good weldability and high fatigue resistance. It is primarily used in the automotive industry for weight-optimised chassis and structural components where high strength and energy absorption are critical. The material is typically supplied as-rolled or normalised rolled, in thicknesses from 1.5 mm up to 20 mm, as coils or cut-to-length sheets.

EN 10149-2 S460MC Steel Mechanical Properties
Minimum mechanical properties as specified in EN 10149-2 for S460MC. The yield and tensile strengths apply to the delivery condition. Elongation values refer to longitudinal specimens, while bending tests are typically performed on transverse samples. For thicknesses above 16 mm, slightly reduced yield strength values may apply; consult the full standard. Impact properties are optional and must be agreed at the time of ordering.

EN 10149-2 S460MC Steel Similar or Alternative Materials with Comparable Performance
| Country/Region | Standard | Grade | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | EN 10149-2 | S420MC | Lower minimum yield strength (420 MPa); otherwise similar chemistry and application scope |
| Europe | EN 10149-2 | S500MC | Higher minimum yield strength (500 MPa); may require adjusted forming parameters |
| Europe | EN 10149-2 (historic) | QStE460TM | Predecessor designation; S460MC is the current designation under EN 10149-2 |
| USA | ASTM A1011/A1011M | HSLAS Grade 65 Class 2 | Minimum yield strength 450 MPa; similar strength level but different chemistry and dimensional tolerances |
| China | GB/T 20887.1 | HR460MC | Comparable 460 MPa grade for cold forming; verify specific mechanical requirements |
Notes:
- If impact toughness is required for the application, the ordering documents must specify the test temperature (e.g. 20 °C, 0 °C, -20 °C) and the minimum absorbed energy, as EN 10149-2 offers the possibility to agree on Charpy V-notch values.
- For improved surface quality, the material can be supplied as pickled and oiled.
- Maximum permissible thickness for guaranteed mechanical properties may be limited; for thicknesses above 16 mm, slight reductions in yield strength are accepted (refer to the standard).
- S460MC can be galvanised or coated, but the effect of the coating process on mechanical properties must be evaluated.
