ASTM A537 CL1 + 304 Stainless Steel Clad Plate Introduction

ASTM A537 CL1 + 304 clad steel plate combines a normalized carbon-manganese-silicon steel base (ASTM A537 Class 1) with an austenitic stainless steel cladding (ASTM A240 Type 304) bonded by hot rolling, explosive welding, or roll bonding. Manufactured in accordance with ASTM A264, it offers an optimal combination of high strength, good toughness, and excellent corrosion resistance on the clad side. The base material provides structural integrity and elevated temperature strength, while the 304 cladding protects against corrosive media. This clad plate is widely used in the fabrication of pressure vessels, reactors, heat exchangers, and storage tanks for chemical, petrochemical, and power generation industries. It is supplied in the normalized condition, with the cladding solution annealed and bonded to ensure metallurgical integrity.

ASTM A537 CL1 + 304 Stainless Steel Clad Plate Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of the clad plate is specified separately for the base metal (ASTM A537 Class 1) and the cladding (ASTM A240 Type 304). The base metal is a carbon-manganese-silicon steel with controlled residual elements to ensure good weldability and toughness. The cladding is the standard 18Cr-8Ni austenitic stainless steel providing excellent corrosion resistance. Full analysis per heat is supplied according to the respective standards.

ASTM A537 CL1 + 304 Stainless Steel Clad Plate Thermal and Electrical Physical Properties

The thermal and electrical properties of the clad plate are dominated by the carbon steel base, as the cladding thickness is typically 3–6 mm compared to total plate thickness from 8 mm up to 150 mm or more. The values below are typical for the overall clad plate at room temperature, based on the carbon steel base. The cladding's lower thermal conductivity and higher electrical resistivity will have a minor influence on bulk properties. For critical design, the properties of the base material are normally used with appropriate safety factors.

ASTM A537 CL1 + 304 Stainless Steel Clad Plate Mechanical Properties

Mechanical properties are primarily determined by the base metal ASTM A537 Class 1. The clad plate must meet the tensile and impact requirements of the base metal, and also pass bend and shear bond tests as per ASTM A264. The cladding tensile properties (Rp0.2 ≥205 MPa, Rm ≥515 MPa, A ≥40%) apply only to the cladding material itself and are not design criteria for the clad plate thickness. The table below summarizes the key property requirements for the clad plate according to the applicable standards.

ASTM A537 CL1 + 304 Stainless Steel Clad Plate Application Introduction

ASTM A537 CL1+304 clad plate combines the load-bearing capacity of A537 Class 1 steel with the corrosion resistance of Type 304 stainless steel. It is particularly suited for equipment exposed to corrosive media on one side while requiring structural integrity. The cladding protects against oxidation, many organic and inorganic chemicals, and atmospheric corrosion. The base material is designed for moderate- and low-temperature service with good notch toughness.

Product Applications: Pressure vessels (reactors, separators, knock-out drums), Heat exchangers (shells, channel boxes, tube sheets), Storage tanks for corrosive chemicals, Columns and towers in process plants, Ducts and chimneys with flue gas corrosion

Processed into products: Reactor shells and heads, Heat exchanger tubesheets, baffles, and shells, Thick-walled storage tank bottom plates, Flanges and nozzles with corrosion-resistant lining, Transition rings and cladding overlay on structural parts, Spiral welded clad pipe and fittings

Application industries: Chemical and petrochemical processing, Oil and gas (refineries, offshore platforms), Power generation (nuclear and fossil-fired plants), Pulp and paper (digesters, bleaching equipment), Water treatment and desalination, Food and beverage (storage vessels)

Notes:

Clad plates can be produced by hot roll bonding, explosive welding, or weld overlay. Typical cladding thickness is 3–6 mm for plate thicknesses up to 100 mm, but other combinations are available. Non-destructive examination (UT, PT) of bond integrity is usually required per ASTM A578 or A435. The base material may be ordered with supplementary impact testing at lower temperatures (e.g., -50°C) or with a higher degree of through-thickness ductility. For design, the cladding thickness is normally not considered in stress calculations, but it contributes to corrosion allowance. Full material certification to EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 is generally provided.
