EN 10025-6 S460QL ERW Pipe Introduction
S460QL is a quenched and tempered fine-grain structural steel specified in EN 10025-6. It is designed for welded load-bearing structures requiring high strength, excellent toughness, and good weldability. The steel offers a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa in both longitudinal and transverse directions, making it suitable for heavy-duty applications. The designation 'QL' indicates a minimum impact energy of 30 J at -40 °C. Manufactured into ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) pipe, S460QL retains its base material properties and is widely used in crane booms, offshore structures, bridges, and heavy machinery. It is supplied in quenched and tempered condition with tight chemical composition control, ensuring reliable performance under dynamic loads and low-temperature service.
EN 10025-6 S460QL ERW Pipe Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of S460QL as per EN 10025-6:2019. These limits ensure good weldability and low-temperature toughness. Elements like Nb, V, Ti are added for grain refinement. Note that for ERW pipe, the chemical composition shall correspond to the base strip/plate; no additional element is typically introduced by the welding process.

Notes:
S460QL ERW pipe requires strict control of welding procedure to preserve toughness in the heat-affected zone. Preheating (typically 100-150 °C) and low hydrogen welding consumables are recommended. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required for thicknesses below 40 mm. The ERW weld seam shall be metallurgically sound and may be cold worked to improve properties. When ordering, specify the delivery condition (Q+T) and impact test temperature (-40 °C). For pressure equipment, supplementary requirements of PED 2014/68/EU or equivalent may apply. Always refer to the latest EN 10025-6 and EN 10219-1 for full specifications.
