DIN 17155 HII Steel Plate Introduction
DIN 17155 HII is a German standard carbon steel plate specifically designed for welded pressure vessels and boilers in elevated-temperature service. It offers good weldability, reliable strength, and satisfactory toughness at moderate temperatures.
- Normalized delivery condition ensures fine grain structure and uniform properties.
- Suitable for components operating up to approximately 400 °C.
- Now largely superseded by EN 10028-2 P265GH, but still widely specified in maintenance and replacement projects.
Typical applications include boiler drums, steam vessels, heat exchangers, and pressure tanks in power generation, chemical, and petrochemical industries.
DIN 17155 HII Steel Plate Chemical Composition
The composition of DIN 17155 HII is controlled to ensure good weldability and high-temperature strength. Maximum limits for impurities and residual elements guarantee resistance to embrittlement and aging.
- Low carbon content provides excellent welding characteristics without preheating for moderate thicknesses.
- Manganese contributes to strength and toughness.
- Strict control of phosphorus and sulfur ensures cleanliness and good ductility.
| Element | Value (%) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon, C | ≤ 0.20 | |
| Silicon, Si | ≤ 0.35 | |
| Manganese, Mn | 0.50 – 1.30 | |
| Phosphorus, P | ≤ 0.035 | |
| Sulfur, S | ≤ 0.030 | |
| Chromium, Cr | ≤ 0.30 | residual |
| Nickel, Ni | ≤ 0.30 | residual |
| Molybdenum, Mo | ≤ 0.08 | residual |
| Copper, Cu | ≤ 0.30 | residual |
| Other elements (total) | ≤ 0.70 | residuals |

DIN 17155 HII Steel Plate Mechanical Properties
Mechanical properties of DIN 17155 HII are guaranteed in the normalized condition. The yield strength decreases with increasing thickness.
- Minimum impact energy at 0 °C is 34 J (longitudinal) unless otherwise specified.
- Bend test uses a mandrel diameter of 2 t (t = plate thickness) up to 20 mm, and 3 t for thicknesses over 20 mm; no cracks shall occur.
- Elongation is measured on a proportional test piece (l₀ = 5.65√S₀).
| Property | Value | Unit | Test Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yield strength, ReH | ≥ 265 | MPa | thickness ≤ 16 mm |
| Yield strength, ReH | ≥ 255 | MPa | 16 mm < thickness ≤ 40 mm |
| Yield strength, ReH | ≥ 240 | MPa | 40 mm < thickness ≤ 60 mm |
| Tensile strength, Rm | 410 – 530 | MPa | thickness ≤ 60 mm |
| Elongation, A (l₀ = 5.65√S₀) | ≥ 22 | % | thickness ≤ 60 mm |

Notes:
- DIN 17155 was withdrawn and is now superseded by EN 10028‑2; however, HII remains a common designation in revision projects.
- Plates are normally delivered with ultrasonic testing (UT) according to EN 10160 or equivalent, if specified.
- Welding consumables should match the base metal (e.g., E7018 for SMAW, ER70S‑6 for GMAW).
- Post‑weld heat treatment (PWHT) is mandatory for thicknesses exceeding 35 mm in many pressure vessel codes.
