DIN 17102 TStE460 Weldable Fine Grain Structural Steel Introduction
TStE460 is a weldable fine grain structural steel specified in the German standard DIN 17102:1983. It belongs to the group of normalized or controlled-rolled low-alloy high-strength steels with a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa. The steel is characterised by excellent weldability, good cold forming properties, and high resistance to brittle fracture even at low temperatures. The fine grain structure is achieved through aluminium grain refinement and, if required, micro-alloying with elements such as niobium, vanadium or titanium. TStE460 is primarily used in heavy steel constructions, crane building, bridge engineering, offshore structures, and pressure vessels where a combination of high strength, toughness and reliable weldability is essential. It is typically delivered in the normalized or controlled-rolled condition as plates, wide flats, or sections.
DIN 17102 TStE460 Weldable Fine Grain Structural Steel Chemical Composition
The chemical composition complies with DIN 17102. The carbon equivalent (CEV) is controlled to ensure good weldability. The grain refinement is ensured by a sufficient aluminium content or by micro-alloying elements such as Nb, V, or Ti. Maximum limits are given unless a range is specified.

DIN 17102 TStE460 Weldable Fine Grain Structural Steel Application Introduction
TStE460 is engineered for welded, high-strength structural applications where weight savings and excellent low-temperature toughness are required. The steel can be readily processed by thermal cutting, cold forming, and all common welding methods. Preheating is typically not necessary for moderate thicknesses due to the low carbon equivalent. Post-weld heat treatment is not mandatory, but may be applied for stress relief if agreed.
Product Applications: Welded bridge girders and box sections, Mobile crane booms and outriggers, Offshore platform deck structures and nodes, Spherical and cylindrical pressure vessels (gas storage, autoclaves), Turbine runner plates and spiral casings, Heavy machinery bases and frames, High-strength penstocks and bifurcations, Heavy-duty truck chassis components
Processed into products: Main load-bearing beams and columns, Flanges and webs of welded plate girders, Crane jib sections and slewing rings, Jacket legs and braces for offshore structures, Shell plates and heads for pressure vessels, Water turbine stay rings and discharge rings, Dump truck bodies and shovel buckets, Bolted splice plates and end plates
Application industries: Bridge engineering, Crane and heavy lifting equipment, Offshore and shipbuilding, Pressure vessel and boiler construction, Mining and earthmoving machinery, Steel construction for power plants, Penstock and pipeline manufacturing, Automotive (heavy-duty vehicle frames)
DIN 17102 TStE460 Weldable Fine Grain Structural Steel Recommended Similar/Alternative Material Standards and Grades

Notes:
TStE460 can be supplied with additional inspection certificates according to EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2. Improved through-thickness properties (Z-quality) are available as options for demanding welded joints. This grade has been largely replaced in current projects by the European standard EN 10025-3 S460N, but is still quoted for maintenance and refurbishment of older installations. For structural design, the yield strength values in this data sheet relate to the minimum specification; actual values are typically higher due to controlled rolling practices.
