DIN 17102 EStE355 Automobile Structure Steel Plate

DIN 17102 EStE355 Fine Grain Structural Steel for Automobile Structures and Welded Components

EStE355 is a normalized fine-grain structural steel under DIN 17102, now superseded by EN 10113-2 and EN 10025-3. It offers minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and excellent weldability, making it ideal for automobile frames, chassis parts, and heavy structural applications.

DIN 17102 EStE355 Automobile Structure Steel Plate Introduction

DIN 17102 EStE355 is a weldable fine-grain structural steel delivered in normalized condition. It is primarily designed for automobile structures and other dynamically loaded welded components.

  • Minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for thickness ≤16 mm
  • Good notch toughness at -20°C (min. 27 J longitudinal)
  • Excellent formability and weldability due to low carbon equivalent
  • Fine grain microstructure achieved by aluminum grain refinement and controlled rolling/normalizing

This steel provides high strength-to-weight ratio and reliable performance in cold bending, flanging, and welding processes.

DIN 17102 EStE355 Automobile Structure Steel Plate Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of EStE355 is defined in DIN 17102:1983. The steel is a C-Mn steel with aluminum addition for grain refinement. Low phosphorus and sulfur contents ensure good ductility and toughness. The maximum carbon equivalent helps guarantee weldability.

  • Tighter limits on residual elements (Cr, Ni, Cu) prevent hot shortness and temper embrittlement.
  • Nitrogen is bound by aluminum to maintain fine grains.

Notes:

Note: All data are sourced from the DIN 17102:1983 standard and superseding EN 10113-2/EN 10025-3 requirements. For critical applications, users should verify the material certification and perform supplementary impact or CTOD testing if required. When substituting with materials from other standards, ensure that the carbon equivalent, through-thickness properties, and heat treatment (normalized) are comparable to maintain weldability and toughness. EStE355 is not intended for use at temperatures below -20°C without additional agreement.
