ASME SA53 Grade B ERW Pipe Introduction
ASME SA53 Grade B ERW pipe is a carbon steel electric-resistance-welded tube produced in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section II, Part A, specification SA-53 (identical to ASTM A53). It is widely used for mechanical and pressure applications, as well as for ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines. Grade B offers a balanced combination of strength and ductility: minimum yield strength of 240 MPa (35 ksi) and tensile strength of 415 MPa (60 ksi). The ERW manufacturing process provides excellent dimensional accuracy and surface finish. The material is suitable for welding, flanging, and bending operations. Common delivery conditions include black (as-welded) or hot-dipped galvanized coatings. It is not intended for high-temperature service above 370°C (700°F) without appropriate derating.

ASME SA53 Grade B ERW Pipe Mechanical Properties
Tensile and yield strengths are determined on full-section pipe specimens or longitudinal strip specimens. Elongation values depend on specimen type and pipe size. Bend test: cold bending 90° around a mandrel with diameter as specified below without cracking.
- Yield strength corresponds to 0.5% extension under load or 0.2% offset method.
- Impact toughness is not required by the base specification; Charpy V-notch testing may be specified by supplementary requirements.
| Property | Standard Required Value | Unit | Test Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength, Rm | 415 min | MPa | Room temperature, longitudinal strip or full section |
| Yield Strength, ReH | 240 min | MPa | Room temperature, 0.5% EUL or 0.2% offset |
| Elongation, A | See note 1 | % | In 50 mm (2 in.) gauge length; varies with pipe size and specimen |

ASME SA53 Grade B ERW Pipe Application Introduction
ASME SA53 Grade B ERW pipe is a versatile steel product suitable for a wide range of mechanical engineering and construction applications. Its combination of moderate strength, good weldability, and cost-effectiveness makes it a preferred choice for fluid transport and structural frameworks. It is not intended for close coiling, forge welding, or severe cold forming without stress relieving. Typical industries and uses include:
Product Applications: Black and galvanized steel pipe, ERW line pipe and casing, Fire sprinkler pipe, Fence pipe and gate frames, Structural hollow sections (converted from round pipe), Conveyor roller tubes, Handrail and guardrail tubes, Tubular poles for lighting and traffic signals
Processed into products: Pipe nipples and couplings, Flanged pipe spools, Bends and elbows, Tees and reducers, Threaded connections (NPT), Welded butt joints and socket-weld fittings, Boiler and condenser tubes (low temperature), Hydraulic cylinder barrels (honed after welding, for non-safety-critical applications)
Application industries: Oil & Gas (onshore gathering lines, tank farm piping, methanol injection lines), Power Generation (balance-of-plant piping, cooling water, fire protection), Chemical & Petrochemical (utility piping, low-pressure steam, condensate return), Water & Wastewater (distribution, wells, treatment plant piping), Building & Construction (structural columns, scaffolding, sign supports, handrails), Fire Protection (sprinkler systems per NFPA 13, standpipes), Machinery & Equipment (bushings, rollers, bearing housings, cylinder tubing in low/medium pressure)
ASME SA53 Grade B ERW Pipe Similar and Alternative Material Designations
| Country/Region | Standard | Designation | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | ASTM A106/A106M | Grade B (Seamless) | Seamless carbon steel pipe with similar chemical/mechanical requirements; higher permissible stress at elevated temperature; not directly interchangeable due to seamless vs. welded difference |
| USA | ASTM A135/A135M | Grade B (ERW) | Similar ERW pipe but with controlled resistance to flattening; often limited to smaller diameters |
| Europe | EN 10255 | S195T (formerly BS 1387 Medium) | Threaded tube for gas and water; lower yield strength (~195 MPa) but used in similar applications with reduced pressure rating |
| China | GB/T 8163 | 20# Seamless | Seamless carbon steel for fluid transport; tensile strength 410-550 MPa, yield ≥245 MPa; can be considered with design adjustments |
| India | IS 1239 (Part 1) | YST 240 | Mild steel tubes for structural and pressure uses; lower carbon content but similar yield; often used for non-critical piping |
Notes:
- Pressure ratings: Must be calculated according to ASME B31.1, B31.3, or applicable code, with appropriate joint efficiency factor (E = 0.85 for ERW pipe unless higher is validated).
- Non-destructive examination: ERW pipe is normally supplied with weld seam ultrasonically tested or hydrostatically tested; supplementary NDE (e.g., eddy current) is available.
- Galvanized pipe: When hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A153, the pipe should not be used in temperatures above 230°C (450°F) due to zinc layer degradation.
- Welding consideration: ERW pipe is easily weldable by all common methods (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW). Preheating is not normally required for wall thicknesses below 25 mm.
- Certification: Material is typically supplied with EN 10204 type 3.1 inspection certificate (or 3.2 by agreement).
