ASME SA53 Grade A ERW Pipe Introduction
ASME SA53 Grade A ERW pipe is a carbon steel tube produced by electric resistance welding, conforming to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section II. It is designated for pressure and mechanical applications at moderate temperatures. The material offers a good balance of strength, ductility, and weldability, with a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa (30 ksi) and minimum tensile strength of 330 MPa (48 ksi).
Key attributes:
- Weldable and formable carbon steel for general piping systems
- Economical ERW manufacturing provides consistent wall thickness
- Suitable for conveying water, steam, air, gas, and non-critical petrochemical fluids
- Available in galvanized, black, or coated finishes
- Widely referenced alongside ASTM A53 Grade A for identical requirements
ASME SA53 Grade A ERW Pipe Chemical Composition
The following limits are for heat analysis according to ASME SA53/SA53M (identical to ASTM A53). For product analysis, tolerances may apply. Copper is only specified when copper steel is ordered.
Notes:
- Residual elements such as Ni, Cr, Mo, and V are controlled to ensure reliable welding and ductility.
- ERW pipe made from continuous cast or pressure cast strand is allowed within these limits.

ASME SA53 Grade A ERW Pipe Mechanical Properties
Minimum tensile properties as required by ASME SA53/SA53M for Grade A pipe. All tensile tests must be performed on longitudinal specimens taken from the finished pipe. Elongation requirements vary with specimen type and wall thickness; the basic elongation method is shown with adjustment notes.
| Property | Required Value | Unit | Test Condition |
|---|---|---|---|

ASME SA53 Grade A ERW Pipe Application Introduction
ASME SA53 Grade A ERW pipe is widely used where moderate strength and good weldability are required. It can be fabricated by cutting, threading, welding, and bending. The material is not intended for elevated temperature service above 400°F (200°C) unless design considerations are made. Common applications include:
- Pressure piping for low to medium pressure steam, water, air, and natural gas distribution
- Structural tubular members in construction and industrial frames
- Mechanical and automotive components where hollow sections are advantageous
- Fire protection sprinkler piping (galvanized finish typically required)
Product Applications: Pressure pipe lines (process piping within ASME B31.3 or B31.1), Steam condensate return lines, Compressed air distribution systems, Fire sprinkler mains and branch lines, Structural columns, bollards, and signposts, Scaffolding tubes, Fence posts and gate frames
Processed into products: Nipples, couplings, and pipe fittings (when threaded or welded), Handrails and guardrails, Exhaust pipes and muffler tubes, Hydraulic cylinder tubing (for non-critical cylinders), Roll cages and chassis frames, Greenhouse structures, Conveyor rollers
Application industries: Building & construction, Water & wastewater treatment, Oil & gas (low-pressure gathering lines), Fire protection, Mechanical engineering, Furniture & agricultural equipment

Notes:
ASME SA53 Grade A ERW pipe is typically supplied with a hydrostatic or nondestructive electric test as specified in the purchase order. Common NDE methods: ultrasonic or eddy current testing. When service requires, the pipe can be furnished with a beveled end or plain end. Marking includes manufacturer's name, specification, grade, type, size, and heat number. Threaded pipe can be supplied with couplings per ASME B1.20.1. For corrosive environments, galvanizing in accordance with ASTM A153/A153M is often specified.
