API 5CT J55 Steel Grade Introduction
API 5CT J55 is a carbon-manganese steel grade specified for seamless and welded casing and tubing in the oil and gas industry. It offers a minimum yield strength of 379 MPa (55 ksi) with good ductility and weldability, making it suitable for low to medium pressure well environments. J55 is one of the most commonly used grades in Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG), capable of being processed as as-rolled, normalized, or quenched and tempered to meet the required mechanical properties. Its moderate strength and cost-effectiveness make it ideal for surface casing, production casing, and tubing strings in conventional wells.
API 5CT J55 Steel Grade Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of API 5CT J55 is specified in Table C.1 of the standard. Only carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur are explicitly limited. Other elements such as silicon, copper, nickel, chromium, and molybdenum may be controlled through supplementary requirements when agreed upon between purchaser and manufacturer.
| Chemical Element | Standard Value (max) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤0.34 | Product analysis max 0.37 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤1.40 | Product analysis max 1.45 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤0.030 | |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤0.030 |

API 5CT J55 Steel Grade Mechanical Properties
Mechanical properties for J55 are defined in API 5CT. Values are based on room temperature tensile tests using standard specimens. For impact toughness, requirements apply only for PSL-2 (Product Specification Level 2) orders; PSL-1 has no mandatory Charpy test. Elongation depends on specimen cross-sectional area and tensile strength; a typical range is provided.
| Property | Standard Requirement (Typical) | Unit | Test Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yield Strength (ReH) | 379 - 552 | MPa | Room temperature, 0.2% offset |
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | ≥ 517 | MPa | Room temperature |
| Elongation after fracture (A) | ≥ 20 (typical min) | % | Dependent on specimen size; calculated per API 5CT formula |
| Charpy V-notch impact energy (PSL-2) | ≥ 20 (full-size transverse specimen, 0 °C) | J | 0 °C, three-specimen average |

API 5CT J55 Steel Grade Application Introduction
J55 is extensively used in onshore and offshore oil and gas operations. Its balance of strength, ductility, and cost makes it a preferred choice for surface casing, intermediate casing, and production tubing in conventional wells. The grade is readily weldable and can be adapted to most OCTG connection types.
Product Applications: Casing strings (surface, intermediate, production), Tubing strings, Couplings and pup joints, Slotted liners
Processed into products: Casing joints, Tubing joints, Wellhead spools and adapters, Cross-over subs, Perforated pipe for sand control
Application industries: Oil and gas exploration & production, Well drilling and completion, Well intervention and workover, Geothermal energy
API 5CT J55 Steel Grade Similar or Near-Equivalent Material Recommendations
| Country / Region | Standard | Grade | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA / International | API 5CT | K55 | Higher tensile strength (≥655 MPa), same yield range; suitable where more string weight may be needed |
| USA / International | API 5CT | N80-1 | Higher strength class (552-758 MPa yield); for deeper or higher-pressure wells |
| USA / International | API 5CT | H40 | Lower strength (276-552 MPa yield); used in shallow, low-pressure applications |
Notes:
- J55 is not intended for sour service (H₂S) unless qualified to NACE MR0175/ISO 15156; additional testing is required.
- Common supplementary requirements include Non-destructive Testing (NDT) of full body or ends, drift testing, and specific end-finish machining.
- Product Specification Level 2 (PSL-2) imposes mandatory Charpy impact testing and stricter quality controls compared to PSL-1.
