SUS XM27 Ferritic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Introduction
SUS XM27 is a low carbon, nitrogen controlled, nickel-free ferritic stainless steel containing approximately 26% chromium and 1% molybdenum. It offers excellent resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC), pitting, and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-bearing aqueous environments. The alloy exhibits good weldability and formability in the annealed condition, with a fully ferritic microstructure that avoids intergranular corrosion issues common in austenitic grades. Supplied as hot-rolled or cold-rolled plates and coils, it is widely used in heat exchangers, condensers, and chemical processing equipment where high corrosion resistance at moderate temperatures is required.
SUS XM27 Ferritic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of SUS XM27 is strictly controlled to achieve a stable ferritic microstructure and high corrosion resistance. Key characteristics include extremely low carbon and nitrogen for improved intergranular corrosion resistance, chromium for passivity, and molybdenum for pitting resistance.

SUS XM27 Ferritic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Similar / Alternative Materials
| Country/Region | Standard | Grade | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | JIS G4304 | SUS 447J1 | 29Cr-4Mo, higher Mo for extreme pitting resistance; more costly |
| USA | ASTM A240 | S44660 (Sea-Cure®) | 26Cr-3Mo, higher Mo content; used in seawater applications |
| USA | ASTM A240 | S44635 (25Cr-4Mo-4Ni) | Duplex or super ferritic, better strength but lower thermal conductivity |
| Japan | JIS G4304 | SUS 444 | 19Cr-2Mo, lower Cr; economical alternative for less aggressive chloride environments |
| Japan | JIS G4304 | SUS 304 | Austenitic; more susceptible to SCC, but widely available and higher ductility |
Notes:
Welding: SUS XM27 can be welded using matching filler metal or slightly over-alloyed nickel-base consumables to maintain corrosion resistance and ductility. Post-weld annealing is recommended for critical applications. Heat treatment: Annealing at 900–1050 °C followed by rapid cooling (air or water) is typical. Limitations: Not recommended for use above 350 °C due to potential 475 °C embrittlement. Avoid prolonged exposure in the 315–540 °C range.
