RINA Grade E Shipbuilding Steel Coil Introduction

RINA Grade E is a normal strength hull structural steel specified by the Italian Classification Society (Registro Italiano Navale) under its Rules for the Classification of Ships. It offers a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa, good weldability, and excellent notch toughness at low temperatures, achieved through fine grain practice with aluminum addition. The steel is typically supplied as hot-rolled coil or plate and is intended for critical structural parts of seagoing vessels, particularly those exposed to cold service conditions.

  • Impact tested at -40 °C (27 J minimum)
  • Fully killed and fine-grain treated
  • Suitable for cold-climate ship construction

RINA Grade E Shipbuilding Steel Coil Chemical Composition

The chemical requirements are based on IACS UR W11 (Normal Strength Hull Structural Steel) as adopted by RINA. Aluminium is mandatory to ensure fine grain size and sufficient low-temperature toughness. Residual elements such as copper, chromium, nickel, and molybdenum are limited by good manufacturing practice but are not individually specified.

ElementStandard ValueRemarks
C≤ 0.18Maximum allowed for Grade E
Mn≥ 0.70Minimum; must also be ≥ 2.5 × C if Al insufficient
Si≤ 0.35Deoxidation element, upper limit
P≤ 0.035Maximum phosphorus content
S≤ 0.035Maximum sulfur content
Al (acid soluble)≥ 0.015Required for fine grain practice and toughness

RINA Grade E Shipbuilding Steel Coil Mechanical Properties

Tensile and impact properties are specified in RINA Rules Part D Chapter 3 and conform to IACS UR W11 for thicknesses up to 50 mm. Impact test temperature for Grade E is -40 °C. Bend test is required for verification of formability. All values are minimum unless a range is indicated.

RINA Grade E Shipbuilding Steel Coil Application Introduction

RINA Grade E is specifically designed for welded structures in shipbuilding and offshore engineering where reliable toughness at sub-zero temperatures is required. It is commonly used in hull envelopes, internal structures, and cold-climate marine equipment. The steel offers good weldability with conventional shipbuilding consumables and can be formed, cut, and welded without preheating at moderate thicknesses.

Product Applications: Bulk carriers, Crude oil and product tankers, Container ships, Offshore platform topsides and jackets, Icebreakers and ice-strengthened vessels, LNG / LPG carrier hulls

Processed into products: Hull bottom and side shell plates, Weather deck plates, Longitudinal and transverse bulkheads, Stiffeners (flat bars, bulb profiles, angles), Web frames and stringers, Floor plates and brackets, Rudder and stern frame plates, Keel plates, Hatch coamings

Application industries: Shipbuilding (commercial and naval), Offshore Oil & Gas, Marine and Coastal Engineering, Cold-region Infrastructure
