JIS SUS317J2 Austenitic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Introduction
SUS317J2 is a low-carbon, high-chromium austenitic stainless steel with additions of nickel and molybdenum. Designed for superior resistance to sulfuric acid and other aggressive environments, it offers excellent intergranular corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition due to its low carbon content (≤0.03%). Key attributes include:
- High chromium (23-26%) and nickel (13-16%) content for strong acid resistance
- Molybdenum (0.5-1.2%) enhances pitting and crevice corrosion performance
- Good mechanical strength and ductility, suitable for forming and welding
- Typical supply forms: hot-rolled or cold-rolled plates, coils, and sheets

JIS SUS317J2 Austenitic Stainless Steel Plate/Coil Similar Alternative Materials and Near-Equivalents
| Country/Region | Standard | Grade | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | JIS G4304/G4305 | SUS317J1 | Higher carbon content (≤0.08%), otherwise same composition; lower weld corrosion resistance |
| USA | ASTM A240/A240M | UNS S31700 | Different composition (Cr 18-20, Ni 11-15, Mo 3-4); only similar in being an austenitic stainless steel, not a direct substitute |
Notes:
Welding: Use low-carbon filler metals such as ER317L or ER385 to maintain corrosion resistance. Generally, post-weld heat treatment is not required, but stress relieving may be applied when risk of chloride stress corrosion cracking exists. Formability: Good cold formability, but higher strength than standard 304/316 requires appropriate force. Machinability: Similar to other austenitic stainless steels; work hardening tendency should be managed with sharp tools and adequate cooling.
