SUS317 is an austenitic stainless steel with enhanced molybdenum content (3-4%) for improved pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to standard 316 grades. It offers excellent resistance in acidic environments, high strength, and good formability. Supplied in solution-annealed condition, SUS317 pipes are extensively used in chemical processing, heat exchangers, and marine applications. The grade is specified under JIS G4305 for cold-rolled plates and sheets, but pipe products typically follow JIS G3459. Its low carbon content (<0.08%) provides adequate weldability without post-weld sensitization. Key attributes include high tensile strength (≥520 MPa), adequate yield (≥205 MPa), and good elongation (≥35%). The addition of molybdenum significantly boosts resistance to sulfuric, phosphoric, and organic acids.

Minimum mechanical properties for SUS317 pipes according to JIS G3459:2012 (Stainless Steel Pipes). Values are for solution-annealed material tested at room temperature. Notes:
SUS317 can be welded with matching filler metals (e.g., ER317 or E317 electrode). Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required but full solution annealing can restore optimum corrosion resistance. Machining requires rigid tools and positive feeds due to work hardening. Avoid prolonged exposure at 550-850°C to prevent sigma phase embrittlement. In high-temperature service above 800°C, scaling resistance may limit use. For applications requiring maximum intergranular corrosion resistance after welding, consider low-carbon SUS317L.
