JIS G3459 SUS 317L TP Introduction
JIS G3459 SUS 317L TP is an austenitic stainless steel pipe designed for machine and structural applications. It contains low carbon (max 0.030%) and higher molybdenum (3-4%) compared to 304/304L, providing excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride environments. This grade offers good weldability and is used in chemical processing, marine, and high-temperature applications. Key features include:
- Superior corrosion resistance in acidic and chloride media
- Excellent intergranular corrosion resistance after welding
- Good high-temperature strength

JIS G3459 SUS 317L TP Similar or Alternative Material Recommendations
| Country/Region | Standard | Grade | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | JIS G3459 | SUS 317 TP | Higher carbon (≤0.08%), less weldable; similar corrosion resistance |
| Japan | JIS G3459 | SUS 316L TP | Lower Mo (2.0-3.0%), slightly lower pitting resistance |
| USA | ASTM A312 | TP316L | Austenitic with Mo, common alternative where 317L overkill |
| Europe | EN 10216-5 | X2CrNiMo17-12-2 (1.4404) | Lower Mo, similar mechanical properties |
Notes:
Welding: Excellent weldability with standard processes (TIG, MIG, SMAW). Post-weld annealing not required for thin sections. Corrosion Resistance: Resistant to sulfuric and phosphoric acids, seawater, and chloride stress corrosion cracking (though susceptible under extreme conditions). Heat Treatment: Solution anneal at 1040-1120°C, rapid cooling. Pickling/Passivation: Recommended after fabrication to restore surface integrity.
