JIS G3459 SUS 317 TP is an austenitic stainless steel pipe grade standardized under Japan Industrial Standard G3459 for corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant service. With higher molybdenum content (3.00–4.00%) compared to SUS 316, SUS 317 offers enhanced pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments, as well as improved resistance to sulfuric acid and other reducing acids.

  • Key properties: Excellent corrosion resistance, good high-temperature strength, non-magnetic in annealed condition, and excellent weldability.
  • Typical delivery condition: Solution annealed and pickled.

JIS G3459 SUS 317 TP is selected where standard 316L stainless steel may be insufficient in chloride pitting resistance or where acidic conditions (sulfuric, phosphoric) are present. Its superior corrosion resistance makes it suitable for a wide range of process industries.

  • Welding: Excellent, using filler metals ER317 or E317 electrodes; solution annealing after welding reduces sensitization risk.
  • Forming: Good formability, similar to other austenitic grades; work hardening rate moderate.

Notes:

Heat treatment: Solution anneal at 1050–1150°C followed by rapid cooling (water quench or air cool for thin sections). Avoid slow cooling to prevent chromium carbide or sigma phase precipitation.

  • For severe service, low-carbon SUS 317L is preferred to avoid intergranular corrosion after welding.
  • Pickling and passivation are recommended to restore surface corrosion resistance after fabrication.
  • Maximum service temperature in oxidizing environments is approximately 870°C; for continuous service, 925°C may be acceptable.
  • Not recommended for use in strongly oxidizing acids like nitric acid at high temperatures, where grade 310 may be more suitable.
