EN10025-5 S355J2WP Weather Resistant Steel Coil Introduction

S355J2WP is a structural steel grade with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, designated according to European standard EN 10025-5. This grade is often referred to as a weather resistant steel, similar to the well-known 'Corten' group. It achieves its corrosion resistance through the formation of a dense, adherent passive rust layer under alternating wet and dry cycles, which markedly slows down further corrosion.

  • Minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for thicknesses ≤ 16 mm
  • Enhanced resistance to atmospheric corrosion due to alloying elements (Cu, Cr, Ni, P)
  • J2 quality: guaranteed impact energy of at least 27 J at -20°C
  • Available in the form of hot-rolled coils, plates and strips
  • Widely used for outdoor structures without protective paint, reducing maintenance costs

EN10025-5 S355J2WP Weather Resistant Steel Coil Application Introduction

S355J2WP is engineered for uncoated outdoor applications where the natural patina offers aesthetic appeal and low maintenance. Its improved atmospheric corrosion resistance makes it suitable for structures exposed to rural, urban, and moderate industrial atmospheres. Welding is possible with appropriate consumables; preheating may be required for thicker sections. Cold forming is good for thicknesses up to 12 mm. The material is often used without paint, but compatible coating systems exist if required.

Product Applications: Structural beams and columns, Outdoor sculptures and facades, Shipping containers and dry bulk hoppers, Pedestrian bridges and footbridges, Noise reduction barriers, Ventilation ducts and chimney shells, Garden and street furniture

Processed into products: Bridge main girders and cross-beams, Facade panels and cladding, Truck frames and container corner fittings, Railway wagon side walls, Chimney shells and flue linings, Pole structures and masts, Architectural fins and louvers

Application industries: Bridge construction, Architecture and building envelopes, Railway rolling stock and freight containers, Highway equipment (sign gantries, noise barriers), Industrial chimneys, ducts and silos, Electrical transmission towers, Shipbuilding (limited to non-marine weathering applications), Artistic and landscape structures

JapanJIS G 3114SMA570PHigher strength weather resistant steel with P, Cr, Cu. Yield 570 MPa; not a 355 MPa grade but used when weight reduction is needed.
ChinaGB/T 4171Q355GNHChinese weathering steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance; yield 355 MPa. P content lower than S355J2WP, may need protective coating in severe environments.
International (ISO)ISO 4952Fe510D1K1ISO equivalent for weather resistant steel; yield 355 MPa, impact at -20°C. Composition may differ in residual elements.

Notes:

Welding: Use matching or slightly overmatching filler metals (e.g., ER80S-W or E81T1-W). For thickness > 30 mm, a low hydrogen process and controlled preheat/interpass temperature are recommended. Corrosion: The protective patina develops only when the surface experiences alternating wet/dry cycles; continuously immersed conditions should be avoided. Paintability: If painted, the surface must be prepared to ensure adhesion; unpainted use is the primary benefit. Availability: Usually supplied in thicknesses from 1.5 mm up to 100 mm as coil, cut lengths, or plate. For thicknesses above 100 mm, consult the manufacturer.
