StE500 under the withdrawn DIN 17102 standard is a hot-rolled, weldable fine-grain structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 500 MPa in the normalized condition. It is designed for welded constructions requiring high strength, good toughness, and superior weldability. The grain refinement is achieved through microalloying elements such as niobium, vanadium, and titanium. Typical delivery condition is normalized or normalized rolled. This steel grade is widely used in heavy machinery, bridges, cranes, offshore structures, and pressure vessels. Modern equivalent is S500N according to EN 10025-3.

The chemical composition of StE500 is controlled for weldability and fine-grain structure. Carbon equivalent is kept low to ensure good cold-cracking resistance. Mechanical properties depend on product thickness. The values below are for the normalized delivery condition. Tests are performed on transverse or longitudinal specimens as specified. Charpy impact energy values are guaranteed at -20°C (StE500 without additional suffix implies sufficient toughness at -20°C; the former standard required longitudinal energy not less than 40 J at -20°C). Bending tests are performed at room temperature with 180° bend.

DIN 17102 StE500 Hot Rolled Steel Coil Application Introduction

StE500 is primarily used in welded constructions where weight reduction and high load-bearing capacity are critical. Due to its fine-grain structure and good toughness at low temperatures, it is suitable for dynamically loaded structures and service at moderate sub-zero temperatures. The material can be formed, punched, and welded with standard procedures. Preheating may be required for thick sections. It is not intended for heat treatment after welding; the normalized condition provides the design properties.

Welding: Low-carbon equivalent design ensures good weldability. Preheating and interpass temperature control according to EN 1011-2 is recommended for thicknesses above 30 mm. Forming: Cold forming up to 5% strain is permitted without subsequent stress relieving.
