Corten A Weathering Steel Pipe Introduction

Corten A (also known as ASTM A242 Type 1) is a high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) weathering steel with superior atmospheric corrosion resistance. Originally developed by U.S. Steel, it contains controlled amounts of copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus, which promote the formation of a dense, adherent protective patina upon exposure to weather. This patina eliminates the need for painting in many environments. Corten A pipe offers yield strength ≥345 MPa and tensile strength ≥485 MPa, combined with good formability and weldability. It is widely used in outdoor structures, architectural facades, bridges, and art installations. Delivered in hot-rolled, normalized, or as-welded condition, it complies with ASTM A242, ASTM A606 Type 4, or ASTM A847 for pipe applications.

Corten A Weathering Steel Pipe Chemical Composition - Corten A

Nominal chemical composition according to original Corten A specification developed by U.S. Steel. Trace elements are balanced to ensure controlled formation of protective patina. Phosphorus (0.07–0.15%) is intentionally elevated to enhance corrosion resistance. Carbon is limited to maintain weldability.

ElementValue (%)Remarks
Carbon (C)≤0.12Improves strength; kept low for weldability
Silicon (Si)0.25 – 0.75Deoxidizer; contributes to patina adhesion
Manganese (Mn)0.20 – 0.50Refines grain, increases toughness
Phosphorus (P)0.07 – 0.15Key element for weathering resistance
Sulfur (S)≤0.030Impurity; minimized for better ductility
Copper (Cu)0.25 – 0.55Critical for patina formation
Chromium (Cr)0.30 – 1.25Enhances corrosion and oxidation resistance
Nickel (Ni)≤0.65Improves toughness and corrosion resistance
Iron (Fe)BalanceBase element

Corten A Weathering Steel Pipe Thermal & Electrical Physical Properties

Physical properties at ambient temperature are similar to low-alloy structural steels. Density 7.85 g/cm³, thermal conductivity ~42 W/(m·K), and electrical resistivity ~0.20 μΩ·m. These values guide design for thermal expansion, heat transfer, and electrical applications.

Corten A Weathering Steel Pipe Mechanical Properties

Mechanical properties are based on ASTM A847 Grade 50 (or ASTM A242 Type 1) for pipe products in as-rolled condition, thickness ≤100 mm. Yield strength ≥345 MPa and tensile strength ≥485 MPa ensure structural reliability. Elongation and bend test verify ductility.

Corten A Weathering Steel Pipe Application Introduction

Corten A weathering steel pipe is ideal for exposed structures where low maintenance and natural aesthetics are desired. Its self-healing patina provides long-term protection. Key considerations:

  • Avoids painting in most atmospheric conditions
  • Compatible with welding (preheat may be required for thick sections)
  • Used in both load-bearing and decorative applications
  • Pre-weathered or bare finish options available

Product Applications: Bridge beams and open-web trusses, Shipping containers and railway wagons, Building facades and curtain walls, Outdoor sculptures and monuments, Industrial chimneys and flues, Pipe rack structures and supports

Processed into products: Welded and seamless pipes (fluid conveyance, structural), Round, square, rectangular hollow sections, Heat exchangers and condenser tubes (with protective oxide), Decorative handrails, bollards, fences, Exhaust pipes and mufflers for heavy vehicles, Armatures for concrete elements

Application industries: Construction & Infrastructure, Transportation (rail, shipping), Architecture & Landscape, Energy (chimneys, exhaust ducts), Art & Sculpture, Industrial equipment

Region / CountryStandardGradeRemarks
USAASTM A588/A588MGrade A (Corten B)Low phosphorus variant; yield 345 MPa, higher Mn & Ni
EuropeEN 10025-5S355J2W (1.8965)Low phosphorus weathering steel; similar strength, different patina color

ChinaGB/T 4171Q355NHSimilar strength with controlled phosphorus, good weldability

Notes:

  • For welded pipes, ASTM A847 requires supplementary chemical and mechanical tests.
  • The protective patina develops under wet-dry cycles; avoid prolonged water ponding.
  • Not recommended for submerged or buried service without additional coating.
  • Pre-welding cleaning and low-hydrogen processes are advised for thick wall sections (>20 mm).
