BV EH40 Shipbuilding Steel Coil Introduction

BV EH40 is a higher strength hull structural steel grade defined by Bureau Veritas Rules for the Classification of Steel Ships and conforms to IACS UR W11. It is delivered in normalized or thermo-mechanically controlled processed (TMCP) condition. The steel features a minimum yield strength of 390 MPa (t ≤ 50 mm), tensile strength ranging 510-650 MPa, and guaranteed impact toughness at -40°C. Typical applications include critical ship hull components, ice-strengthening plates, and offshore structures. Its chemical composition is microalloyed with Nb, V, Ti to provide fine grain strengthening and weldability with controlled carbon equivalent (CEV max 0.38).

BV EH40 Shipbuilding Steel Coil Application Introduction

BV EH40 steel is designed for welded structures in shipbuilding and offshore engineering where high strength and excellent low-temperature impact toughness are essential. It is commonly used in icebreaker hulls, Arctic ships, and critical structural members such as shell plates, decks, and bulkheads. The steel can be processed by various welding methods (SAW, SMAW, FCAW) with appropriate preheat and interpass temperature control. It is also suitable for cold bending, machining, and flame cutting.

Product Applications: Ship hull plates and profiles, Cargo hold structural members, Ice-strengthening belts and transoms, Deck plating and hatch covers, Longitudinal and transverse frames, Bulkhead plates, Rudder horns and stern frames

Processed into products: Shell plates (keel, bilge, side), Main deck stringers and web frames, Bulkhead stiffeners and brackets, Stem and stern posts, Rudder plates, Ice knife and ice horn, Bollards and mooring pads (as rolled)

Application industries: Shipbuilding (commercial and naval vessels, ice-class ships), Offshore oil & gas (jackets, topsides, FPSO modules), Marine engineering (port structures, lock gates, drilling rigs), Renewable energy (offshore wind turbine foundations)

Notes:

Note: The above data are based on IACS UR W11 Rev.11 and BV Rules Part 2, Chapter 1, published June 2022. For actual material certificates, the specific heat number and manufacturing process must be verified. Welding consumables shall be selected to match the mechanical properties and toughness requirements. Preheating may be necessary depending on thickness, combined thickness, and weld hydrogen control. Supplementary requirements such as Z-grade (through-thickness properties) or CTOD testing may be specified for critical offshore applications.
