BV A420 is a high-strength hull structural steel grade certified by Bureau Veritas (BV), meeting the requirements of BV Rules for Classification of Ships. It belongs to the series of normalized or thermo-mechanically controlled processed (TMCP) steels with a minimum specified yield strength of 420 MPa. The 'A' designation indicates impact testing at 20°C, making it suitable for moderate temperature applications where notch toughness at ambient conditions is sufficient. Typical delivery condition is TMCP or normalized. This grade offers an optimal balance of strength, weldability, and formability, enabling weight reduction in ship structures without compromising safety. It is widely used in hull plates, stiffeners, and structural members of large vessels.

Mechanical properties are determined on transverse tensile test specimens. Strength values depend on product thickness. Charpy V-notch impact tests are performed on longitudinal specimens at 20°C, minimum average absorbed energy 27 J. Bending tests are conducted with mandrel diameter as per BV requirements.
