BS EN 10149-2 S550MC Hot Rolled Steel Coil Introduction

S550MC is a thermomechanically rolled, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel for cold forming, specified in BS EN 10149-2:2013. It offers a minimum yield strength of 550 MPa in the as-delivered condition, combined with excellent cold formability, weldability, and good toughness. The 'MC' designation indicates it is produced by thermomechanical rolling, achieving fine grain structure and optimised mechanical properties.

  • Suitable for complex cold-formed components in the automotive, construction, and general engineering sectors.
  • Typical applications include structural members, chassis parts, reinforcement profiles, and safety-related elements where weight reduction and high strength are critical.
  • Available as hot rolled coils, slit strips, or cut-to-length sheets in pickled and oiled or dry finish.

BS EN 10149-2 S550MC Hot Rolled Steel Coil Chemical Composition

The ladle analysis according to BS EN 10149-2:2013 ensures precise alloying for controlled strength and formability. Limits are maximum unless a range or minimum is indicated.

  • Carbon is kept very low to maintain weldability and toughness.
  • Microalloying elements (Nb, V, Ti) provide grain refinement and precipitation strengthening.
  • The sum Nb+V+Ti is restricted to avoid excessive hardening.

C (Carbon)≤ 0.12%Low carbon for weldability
Mn (Manganese)≤ 1.80%Solid solution strengthening
Si (Silicon)≤ 0.50%Deoxidation, minor strengthening
P (Phosphorus)≤ 0.025%Controlled for toughness

BS EN 10149-2 S550MC Hot Rolled Steel Coil Mechanical Properties

Mechanical requirements are valid for test pieces oriented parallel to the rolling direction, in the as-delivered condition. Values depend on product thickness.

  • Yield strength (ReH) and tensile strength (Rm) are determined according to EN ISO 6892-1.
  • Elongation (A) uses proportional or non-proportional gauge lengths as indicated.
  • Bending test according to EN ISO 7438 (mandrel diameter as a multiple of thickness).
  • Impact properties are not mandatory; if required, they must be agreed at the time of enquiry and order.

Notes:

  • The base material is typically supplied with trimmed edges and in pickled and oiled condition to prevent corrosion during storage and to facilitate forming.
  • For improved cold formability, a smooth surface finish without scale is recommended, hence pickling is applied.
  • Welding: All common methods are suitable (MAG, resistance spot, laser). No preheating is generally required due to low carbon content.
  • Impact toughness: If required, the verification of absorbed energy shall be agreed at the time of order. Typical values for S550MC at -20 °C (longitudinal Charpy V-notch) can reach 40 J but must be specified.
  • Tolerances on dimensions and shape follow EN 10051 and EN 10131, respectively.
  • Marking and documentation: The product is accompanied by an inspection certificate 2.2 or 3.1 according to EN 10204, stating the chemical composition and mechanical test results.
