BS EN 10149-2 S355MC Hot Rolled Steel Coil Introduction
S355MC is a thermomechanically rolled high yield strength steel for cold forming, specified in BS EN 10149-2:2013. It offers a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and excellent cold formability, making it ideal for structural and automotive applications where weight reduction and high strength are critical. The thermomechanical rolling process refines grain structure, providing a fine balance of strength, toughness, and weldability without the need for subsequent heat treatment. Typical uses include chassis components, cold-formed profiles, and structural hollow sections.
BS EN 10149-2 S355MC Hot Rolled Steel Coil Chemical Composition
The chemical composition meets the requirements of EN 10149-2 for grade S355MC. All values are maximum unless a range is specified. The steel is fully killed with a minimum aluminium content to ensure fine grain structure. Microalloying elements (Nb, V, Ti) are controlled for grain refinement and precipitation strengthening. The sum of Nb+V+Ti is limited to 0.22% max to maintain consistent formability.
| Element | Standard Value (max %) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| C | 0.12 | |
| Si | 0.50 | |
| Mn | 1.50 | |
| P | 0.025 | |
| S | 0.020 | |
| Altotal | ≥ 0.015 | Minimum for fine grain practice |
| Nb | 0.09 | |
| V | 0.20 | |
| Ti | 0.15 | |
| Nb+V+Ti | 0.22 | Maximum combined content |

BS EN 10149-2 S355MC Hot Rolled Steel Coil Mechanical Properties
Mechanical properties are valid for thermomechanically rolled condition (+M) and tested in accordance with EN 10149-2. Values depend on product thickness. For thicknesses not covered, the nearest range applies. The tensile test is performed transverse to the rolling direction using proportional test pieces (80 mm gauge length for thickness <3 mm, 5.65√S₀ for ≥3 mm). Bend tests are conducted at 180° with the specified mandrel diameter.
| Property | Standard Required Value | Unit | Test Condition / Thickness Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yield strength (ReH) | ≥ 355 | MPa | t ≤ 16 mm |

Notes:
For impact toughness requirements, an additional agreement with the producer is necessary, as EN 10149-2 does not specify mandatory Charpy values. The steel is suitable for galvanizing. Dimensions and tolerances follow EN 10131 and EN 10051. If cold forming involves severe stretching, bend radii should follow the recommendations of the standard to avoid cracking.
