ASTM A789 UNS S39277 is a super duplex stainless steel designed for seamless and welded pipes in general corrosive service. It combines high strength with exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in chloride-containing environments. The microstructure consists of approximately equal amounts of austenite and ferrite. Typical trade names include Zeron 100. This grade is characterized by:

  • High chromium (24-26%) and molybdenum (3.5-4.5%) content for superior pitting resistance (PREN ≥40)
  • Tungsten (0.5-1.0%) and copper (1.0-2.5%) additions to enhance corrosion resistance and mechanical strength
  • Controlled nitrogen (0.24-0.32%) for improved weldability and balancing the phase ratio
  • Excellent mechanical properties with yield strength above 620 MPa in solution-annealed condition

UNS S39277 super duplex stainless steel pipe is selected when high mechanical strength and outstanding resistance to chlorine-induced corrosion are required. It is widely used in aggressive environments such as seawater, brine, sour gas, and chemical processing media. The alloy can withstand operating temperatures from -50°C to 300°C and is resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking up to approximately 150°C. Typical applications are listed below.
