ASTM A511 MT 316L Stainless Steel Seamless Mechanical Tubing Introduction

ASTM A511 MT 316L is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel supplied as seamless mechanical tubing. With a low carbon content (max 0.03%), it offers excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or stress relieving. This grade exhibits superior corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments compared to standard 304L, coupled with good high-temperature strength and formability. Typical delivery condition is solution annealed. The material is widely used in the chemical, petrochemical, food processing, pharmaceutical, and marine industries.

  • Low carbon for as-welded corrosion resistance
  • Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion
  • Good mechanical properties at ambient and moderately elevated temperatures
  • Non-magnetic in the annealed condition, slightly magnetic when cold worked

ASTM A511 MT 316L Stainless Steel Seamless Mechanical Tubing Application Introduction

ASTM A511 MT 316L tubing is designed for mechanical and general engineering applications where corrosion resistance, cleanliness, and good surface finish are essential. It is not intended for pressure containment unless further compliance with relevant pressure tube standards (e.g., ASTM A213) is verified. The low carbon content makes it ideal for welded assemblies without post-weld heat treatment.

  • Solution annealed tubing is readily formable and weldable.
  • Commonly used in sanitary tubing, instrumentation, and structural corrosion-resistant parts.

Product Applications: Heat exchanger tubes, Condenser tubes, Instrumentation tubing, Sanitary tube systems, Structural hollow sections for corrosive atmospheres, Springs (when cold worked), Flexible metal hose

Processed into products: Tube fittings and connectors (ferrules, elbows, tees, reducers), Valve bodies and stems, Pump shafts and sleeves, Fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers when machined from tubing), Flow measurement probes and sensor enclosures, Heat exchanger tube bundles, Compression fittings and collets

Application industries: Chemical processing (heat exchangers, condensers, piping), Food and beverage processing (sanitary tubing, fittings), Pharmaceutical and biotechnology (clean piping, process equipment), Oil & gas (instrumentation, hydraulic lines, chemical injection), Marine engineering (seawater piping, offshore structures), Automotive (fuel rails, sensor housings), Aerospace (hydraulic and fuel lines, structural components), Architectural and construction (handrails, structural supports in corrosive environments)

ASTM A511 MT 316L Stainless Steel Seamless Mechanical Tubing Similar/Comparable Substitute Materials

Country/RegionStandardGrade/DesignationRemarks
USA/EuropeASTM A511 / EN 10216-5MT 316 (UNS S31600) / 1.4401Higher carbon (max 0.08 %), slightly lower weldability; similar corrosion resistance but may suffer sensitization after welding without post-weld solution annealing
USA/EuropeASTM A511 / EN 10216-5MT 316Ti (UNS S31635) / 1.4571Titanium-stabilized variant; better resistance to intergranular corrosion after heating in the critical range; often used where 316L is not sufficient for high-temperature corrosion resistance
USA/EuropeASTM A511 / EN 10216-5MT 317L (UNS S31703) / 1.4438Higher molybdenum content (3.0–4.0 %) for enhanced corrosion resistance in severe chloride environments; slightly higher nickel content
USAASTM A269TP304L (UNS S30403)Economical alternative where molybdenum is not required for pitting resistance; lower corrosion resistance in chloride media

Notes:

The values provided in the thermal and electrical table are typical for 316L stainless steel and may vary with exact composition and processing. Surface finish: ASTM A511 covers both pickled and bright annealed finishes; supplemental requirements for surface quality can be specified. Testing: Hydrostatic or non-destructive testing (e.g., eddy current, ultrasonic) is available as a supplemental requirement. Fabrication practices: 316L is excellent for TIG, MIG, and resistance welding; autogenous welding is common. Avoid prolonged exposure in the 425–860 °C range to prevent sigma phase embrittlement. Magnetic properties: Slightly magnetic after severe cold working. Cold working tempers: Various tempers (1/8 hard, 1/4 hard, 1/2 hard, full hard) can be ordered with mechanical properties agreed upon per ASTM A511.
