ASTM A511 MT 310S Stainless Steel Seamless Mechanical Tube Introduction
ASTM A511 MT 310S is an austenitic stainless steel seamless mechanical tube designed for elevated temperature and corrosive environments. The grade 310S (UNS S31008) offers excellent oxidation resistance up to 1035°C (1900°F) and good resistance to sulfidation and carburization. Its high chromium (24–26%) and nickel (19–22%) contents, combined with a low carbon content (≤0.08%), minimize carbide precipitation and provide superior corrosion resistance in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres.
- High creep strength and rupture properties at elevated temperatures.
- Good ductility and weldability.
- Typical applications include furnace components, heat exchangers, burners, and annealing covers.
- Delivered in annealed and pickled condition as per ASTM A511.
This material is often selected for applications where 304 or 316 stainless steels would suffer from excessive scaling or thermal fatigue.

ASTM A511 MT 310S Stainless Steel Seamless Mechanical Tube Similar or Closely Related Materials
| Country/Region | Standard | Grade/Designation | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| USA | ASTM A240 | UNS S31000 (Type 310) | Higher carbon (0.25% max), similar oxidation resistance but lower weldability |
| USA | ASTM A240 | UNS S31609 (Type 316H) | Lower Cr-Ni content, better resistance to reducing acids, lower maximum service temperature |
| USA | ASTM A240 | UNS N08330 (Alloy 330) | Higher nickel (34–37%), superior carburization resistance up to 1150°C |
| Europe | EN 10095 | 1.4835 (X9CrNiSiNCe21-11-2) | High-temperature grade with nitrogen and rare earths for enhanced oxidation resistance |
Notes:
The material may be susceptible to sigma phase embrittlement after prolonged exposure between 540°C and 900°C. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment are generally not required for 310S due to its fully austenitic structure, but caution is needed to avoid hot cracking. Low carbon content minimizes sensitization during welding.
