ASTM A283 Grade C Carbon Steel Coil Introduction

ASTM A283/A283M Grade C is a low-to-intermediate tensile strength carbon steel used primarily for structural applications in the as-rolled condition. It is suitable for welded, bolted, and riveted construction in buildings, bridges, and general engineering structures. The steel offers good formability, weldability, and toughness at ambient temperatures. Typical thicknesses for coil products range up to 40 mm, with mechanical properties tailored to moderate strength requirements. The material is not intended for pressure vessels or high-strength quenched-and-tempered applications. Its chemistry is controlled to ensure reliable welding and forming, while maintaining cost-effectiveness.

ASTM A283 Grade C Carbon Steel Coil Chemical Composition

The following table complies with ASTM A283/A283M-18 for Grade C. Values are maximum unless a range is indicated. Silicon is controlled when semi-killed or killed steel is specified. Copper may be present as a residual or as an intentional addition for atmospheric corrosion resistance; when specified as a copper steel, a minimum copper content is required.

ElementStandard Value (max, wt%)Remarks
Carbon (C)0.24 (thickness ≤ 40 mm)
0.27 (thickness > 40 mm)
For plate, coil, and strip
Manganese (Mn)0.90Maximum; for thickness > 40 mm and copper steel selected, Mn may be adjusted to 0.80 max
Phosphorus (P)0.030Maximum by heat analysis
Sulfur (S)0.030Maximum by heat analysis
Silicon (Si)0.40 max
(0.15–0.40 when silicon-killed)
Optional; range applies when silicon-killed steel is specified
Copper (Cu)0.20 min (when copper steel is specified)
otherwise residual
Copper content ≥ 0.20% provides improved atmospheric corrosion resistance (optional)

ASTM A283 Grade C Carbon Steel Coil Mechanical Properties

Values are the minimum or range requirements per ASTM A283/A283M-18 for Grade C in the as-rolled condition. Tensile testing is performed transverse to the rolling direction. Bend test requirements are for cold bending through 180° without cracking. Impact testing is not a standard requirement unless specified in the order.

ASTM A283 Grade C Carbon Steel Coil Application Introduction

ASTM A283 Grade C is designed for general structural purposes. It is easily fabricated and can be welded, bolted, or riveted. The steel is most often supplied as hot-rolled coil or cut sheet for applications where moderate strength and good ductility are required. It is not intended for pressure-containing components or fatigue-critical dynamically loaded members unless properly designed. Forming processes such as bending, shearing, and punching are readily performed. The material can also be hot-dip galvanized for corrosion protection.

Product Applications: Structural beams, columns, and channels (secondary members), Floor plates and checkered plates, Welded storage tanks and silos, Corrugated roofing and siding sheets, Agricultural implements (plows, cultivators), Trailer frames and chassis, Guardrails and highway components

Processed into products: Brackets and gussets, Machine bases and frames, Stamped and formed brackets, Pipe flanges (non-critical service), Bus body panels, Container parts, Shelving and racking systems, Support channels and angle clips

Application industries: Construction and civil engineering (building frames, bridges, transmission towers), Agricultural machinery and equipment, Storage tank fabrication (non-pressurized), Railway cars and automotive components, Furniture and appliance manufacturing, General sheet metal fabrication

Notes:

  • When impact toughness is required, supplementary requirements (e.g., Charpy V-notch) shall be agreed upon at the time of ordering.
  • Coil products may be supplied with mill edge or slit edge; tolerances according to ASTM A568/A568M.
  • Surface finish can be as-rolled, pickled and oiled, or blast cleaned — purchaser should specify.
  • For welded structures, preheat may be needed for thicknesses above 25 mm; follow AWS D1.1 recommendations.
  • Always verify suitability for seismic or low-temperature conditions by testing, as this grade is not inherently impact tested.
