API 5L X42 PSL1 LSAW Pipe: High-Strength Pipeline Steel for Oil & Gas Transmission

API 5L X42 PSL1 is a high-strength low-alloy steel designed for oil and gas transportation pipelines, offering excellent weldability and reliability in welded LSAW pipes.

Longitudinal submerged arc welding (LSAW), UOE/JCOE forming, tack welding, final welding, and optional stress relief.

API 5L X42 PSL1 LSAW Pipe Introduction

API 5L X42 PSL1 is a grade of line pipe steel defined by the American Petroleum Institute (API) Specification 5L for product specification level 1. It is primarily used in longitudinal submerged arc welded (LSAW) pipes for conveying oil, gas, and water in the petroleum and natural gas industries. The material offers a minimum yield strength of 290 MPa (42 ksi) and a minimum tensile strength of 414 MPa (60 ksi). Its controlled chemical composition and good toughness make it suitable for low to moderate pressure transmission systems. The grade provides a balance between strength, formability, and weldability, ensuring reliable performance in various environmental conditions.

API 5L X42 PSL1 LSAW Pipe Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of API 5L X42 PSL1 is based on ladle analysis according to API Spec 5L. Carbon equivalent (CE) formulas may also apply to ensure weldability. Typical limits are indicated below; actual values may be further restricted by supplementary requirements or by the pipe manufacturer's internal specifications.

API 5L X42 PSL1 LSAW Pipe Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties are specified by API Spec 5L for the pipe body and weld seam. Tensile testing is performed in the transverse direction. Elongation requirements are calculated according to the standard formula based on tensile strength and specimen area. For LSAW pipe, the weld zone shall also meet the required tensile strength, and guided bend tests verify ductility.

API 5L X42 PSL1 LSAW Pipe Application Introduction

API 5L X42 PSL1 LSAW pipe is predominantly used in the oil and gas sector for medium-pressure onshore and offshore pipelines. Its properties also make it suitable for structural applications, water transmission, and piling. The LSAW manufacturing process allows large diameters and thick walls, making it ideal for major trunk lines and distribution networks.

Product Applications: Mainline pipeline segments for oil and natural gas, Gathering and distribution lines, Onshore and offshore riser pipes, Structural hollow sections for heavy construction, Sheet piling and foundation pipes, Penstocks and water mains

Processed into products: LSAW pipe spools and field bends, Flanged and welded field joints, Tees, reducers, and end caps fabricated from the same grade, Pipeline support frames and saddles, Subsea pipeline manifolds (if properly coated and designed), Casing pipes for wells and conduits

Application industries: Oil & Gas (upstream and midstream transmission), Water and wastewater transportation, Structural and civil engineering (piling, bridge supports), Petrochemical and refinery piping, Slurry and mineral transport pipelines

Notes:

For PSL1, notch toughness (Charpy impact) testing is not mandatory, but can be specified via supplementary requirements. Weld repair and heat treatment are subject to purchaser specifications. LSAW pipe must be manufactured with a full-length longitudinal weld, and the weld shall be fully penetrated. All testing and inspection must comply with API 5L requirements, and traceability of the steel source is maintained. Additional requirements for sour service (e.g., NACE MR0175) may demand lower hardness and stricter chemistry limits, which are typically covered under PSL2 or separate annexes.
