ABS Grade DQ56 Shipbuilding Steel Coil Application Introduction
ABS DQ56 is engineered for weight-critical, high-stress ship and offshore structures operating in cold climates. The quenched and tempered microstructure provides an excellent strength-to-weight ratio while maintaining sufficient ductility for structural safety. Its good weldability and low-temperature toughness make it suitable for thick-section fabrication without excessive preheating. Typical processing includes plasma/flame cutting, submerged-arc welding (SAW), and cold or hot forming. Post-weld heat treatment is generally avoided to preserve the properties of the tempered steel. Connections must follow approved welding procedures as per ABS welding standards.

Notes:
Certification: ABS surveyor inspection and stamping are required. Material shall be produced at an ABS-approved mill. NDT: Ultrasonic testing per ABS requirements is mandatory for thicker plates. Welding: Preheating temperature typically 100–150°C depending on thickness and hydrogen control. Use low-hydrogen consumables. Maximum interpass temperature should be monitored. The quenched and tempered condition limits hot work; hot forming must be followed by a new heat treatment if allowed.
