06Cr18Ni11Nb Stainless Steel Plate/Coil per GB/T 4237 Introduction

06Cr18Ni11Nb (previously designated 0Cr18Ni11Nb) is a niobium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel supplied as hot-rolled plate or coil per GB/T 4237. The addition of niobium prevents intergranular corrosion caused by chromium carbide precipitation during welding or elevated-temperature service. It exhibits excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, good high-temperature strength, and superior weldability. Typical applications include chemical processing equipment, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and components exposed to temperatures up to about 800°C. The alloy is the Chinese counterpart to the internationally recognized 347 (UNS S34700) grade.

06Cr18Ni11Nb Stainless Steel Plate/Coil per GB/T 4237 Application Introduction

06Cr18Ni11Nb is a versatile stabilized stainless steel that excels in environments where intergranular corrosion from welding or elevated temperature exposure is a concern. Its ability to resist sensitization makes it a popular choice for welded fabrications that cannot be solution annealed after fabrication. The material maintains high strength and oxidation resistance up to about 800°C, and it is widely used across chemical, petrochemical, and energy sectors.

Product Applications: Hot-rolled stainless steel plates and coils, Welded pipe and tube, Fittings and flanges, Heat exchanger shells and tube sheets, Storage tanks and process vessels, Furnace parts and radiant tubes, Expansion bellows, Reactor internals

Processed into products: Tube sheets and baffles in shell-and-tube heat exchangers, Pressure vessel shells and heads welded from plate, Welded piping systems for high-temperature corrosive fluids, Catalyst support grids in reformers, Burner tips and combustion chambers, Nuclear steam generator tubing (when qualified), Food processing mixing bowls and conveyor parts

Application industries: Chemical processing, Petrochemical and oil refining, Power generation (conventional and nuclear), Food and beverage processing, Pharmaceutical equipment, Desalination plants, Pressure vessel manufacturing, Heat exchanger and boiler production

06Cr18Ni11Nb Stainless Steel Plate/Coil per GB/T 4237 Similar / Alternative Materials for Comparison

Country/RegionStandardGradeNotes on Similarity
ChinaGB/T 423706Cr18Ni11Ti (0Cr18Ni11Ti / 321)Titanium-stabilized instead of niobium; similar mechanical and corrosion properties, better for temperatures <400°C where both perform equally, but 06Cr18Ni11Nb is preferred for applications involving polycrystalline sensitization or welding without post-weld heat treatment in thick sections.
USAASTM A240321 (UNS S32100)Titanium-stabilized version of 304; slightly lower high-temperature strength compared to 347
USAASTM A240304L (UNS S30403)Low-carbon unstabilized grade; less suitable for service above 425°C but offers good general corrosion resistance and weldability at lower cost

Notes:

For applications requiring enhanced resistance to intergranular attack after extended exposure in the 425-815°C range, a stabilizing heat treatment may be considered even after welding. The niobium content is normally controlled to Nb/(C+N) ≥ 8× to ensure full stabilization. When ordering, it is recommended to specify applicable standards (e.g., GB/T 4237), surface finish, and any supplementary requirements such as impact testing or non-destructive examination.
